If i identify an item with a level 24 character will the item be level 24? Or are item level not tied to the level of the character that identify them?
item level is directly tied to where it came from. if a monster dropped it, it is exactly the level of the monster
As Kabryxis says, they are tied to the monster that dropped it. To figure out the level of the monsters, you can look up the “area level” of the zone online, such as here: Area Level | Diablo Wiki | Fandom
Keep in mind that Champion monsters are +2 above the area while Unique and minions are +3, per the Arreat Summit: The Arreat Summit - Monsters: Monster Bonuses
So if you’re farming Normal Cows and a Crystal Sword drops from a normal cow, it would be ilvl 28, but if it drops from a Champion cow, it would be ilvl30, and from a Unique or Minion, it would be ilvl 31.
You could also then look up maximum sockets for an ilvl as well, such as here: Sockets - Diablo Wiki
If you wanted to see what your odds with adding sockets with the cube are, or know what you’d get from Larzuk quest.
In our Crystal Sword example, it needs to be ilvl 26 to 40 to get 4 sockets from Larzuk. So if you dropped one from say, a Champion or Unique monster in normal World Stone Keep lvl 2 or 3, which has an area level of 40, the item would actually be ilvl42 or 43, and get 6 sockets from Larzuk.
character level typically only matters for item level when it comes to buying or gambling items from vendors.
Displaying an item’s ilevel is a quality-of-life issue that’s already asked a lot and doesn’t require much.
do note that monster levels are not tied to area level in normal. this concept is only for nightmare and hell and only happens to be correct circumstantially for cows. it does not apply anywhere else in normal.
