Actually, this is one of QoL that most of purists also want. If you look the old Beta forum, it same the same amount + feedback as endless moo-moo.

I have found 3 socket sword in Normal Cow level.
I have tested to add 4th socket from Larzuk, but it does not allow me to do soā€¦
Seems like Larzuk is only socketing items wihotu any socketā€¦

Cause the item canā€™t have sockets. Needs to be a white item with no sockets (if going for multi sockets, he can also do magic, rare, unique but those are far more limited on total sockets and not useful for runewords.

I have found 3 socket sword in Normal Cow level.

Items can drop with any amount of sockets that they can roll. Which is why people use Larzuk as it will always give you the max amount of sockets an item can roll when it doesnā€™t have sockets all ready. ie: crystal sword can only get 4 sockets max when dropped by cows, so Larzuk will always give 4 sockets in his quest.

Long sword or broad sword in WHITE color will net you a 4 socket from Larzuk

Just last night I gave him a polearm that I wanted four sockets in and he put six.

You just canā€™t win with this guy.
