Hello all,
The guides say to get it from cow level and take to lazrus in act 5 to socket. I did but he only gave me 3 sockets. So I made in cube with amn and perfect amethyst but also only got 3 sockets.
What is going on? The guides for my build all say to use a 4 socket crystal sword for the runeword but everything is giving me 3.
Please help!
You have used sword with too low ilvl.
Try to find it on normal cows - it will always be at right ilvl.
Cube rolls a random number of sockets from 1-6, if the max is lower than 6 it will take the max for the ilvl if it rolls higher. Say you roll 5 sockets but item is capped at 4, you get 4.
If larzuk gave a crystal sword 3 sockets, you didn’t get it from cows. He always gives max sockets, and cows are at an ilvl that will always give crystal sword and broadsword 4 sockets. That is an easy mistake to make sadly. One of the reasons a lot of people want ilvls to be shown.
I wouldn’t wast a larz socket on a crystal sword. They are fairly easy to come by in Normal Cows. I’d try rolling in it the cube.
I’d recommend a broad sword. That always seems to be 4-sock from my experience. Eventually you’ll want enough str anyways on most characters to equip high level gear. So it’s not a bad idea to try the broad sword. I wish I could afford to give you mine. My apologies!
I’d say the gems and runes are worth more than a single socket quest personally.
But then I wouldn’t use it on a crystal sword either, 4 socket swords are common enough in a1 nightmare. I got 2 of mine in the same tristram clear.
Are you sure that you got the sword on cow level? Because the sword socket by larzuk will have max sockets based on ilevel.
Cows have lvl28 so would guarantee you that will be 4 sockets.
On cube recipe would be random number of slots
I found it in the cow level on normal, the guides say specifically do that, still 3 sockets 
I have this problem too. My Level 34 Sorceress got a 3 Socket Crystal Sword from the Normal Cow Level, but Laz will not add a socket to it. I don’t even have the option.
What did I do wrong?
you can’t change the sockets on an already-socketed sword. you can only add sockets to an unsocketed one.
It must be ilvl 26-40 to roll 4 sockets at Larzuk.
All of act 4 normal and zones in act 5 starting in Arreat Plateau through WSK2 will meet this requirement. As well as the cow level.
So if I get a normal CS with no sockets from the Normal Cow Level and take it to A5, it won’t add 1 socket but 4 sockets?

That’s correct. If the CS dropped from a normal cow, larzuk will add 4 sockets.
If I get a socketed Crystal Sword from the Normal Cow Level, could I use the Horadric Cube to reroll the sockets and get 4?
You can try it, any roll ranging from 4-6 sockets will make it 4socket(because it came from Norm Cows) so there is a 50% chance of success. Larzuk will guarantee it as 4 but there are arguably better ways to be spending the Add Sockets reward.
Edit: I misread your post, this only applies to plain ‘white’ cswords.
No, you can’t re-roll the number of sockets in an item either with the cube or with larzuk. That 3 socket sword will never become a 4 socket sword.
Your options are:
I found a plain CS in A1 Nightmare and got it socketed and my Spirit made.
This is kind of missleading as in many cases you can get too high ilvl on it and will get 6 sockets from socket quest.
Or opposite case, some monsters are too low in these zones to provide 4 sockets.

The first link has a section ‘sockets by number’ with every item and 3 columns: Ilvl 1-25, Ilvl 26-40 , and Ilvl 41+
Crystal sword, ilvl 26-40: 4 sockets
On the area level page, EVERY AREA from normal act 4 Outer Steppes through act 5 WSK 2 except Bloody Foothills and Frigid Highlands is alvl 26-40. And cows is alvl 28.
So explain how I’m wrong.
