Hi everyone, OG player coming back after 10 years. I tried researching via google when the 4 os crystal sword and 4 os polearms start dropping but mostly find people referencing the Lazaruk quest. Anyone know?
Seems the online consensus is normal cows can drop a crystal sword with 4 os, and need to be in NM to get a drop with 4 os polearm. This sound right?
you can farm normal cows for a zero socket crystal sword and use your socket quest so it will get four sockets…even in nm or hell if you find a long sword or broad sword you can use socket quest on those as well for a four socket sword as those can get a max of four sockets.
Thanks gfreak, but what act and difficulty do the both drop organically, so i don’t need a socket quest.

No, normal cows won’t do, you need to farm on NM at least crystal sword, idk about polearm though. I would post a link but it is not allowed. Just google some d2 related article about sockets.
I think 4os stuff starts dropping from monsters at or above mlvl 27. Some rares in act 2 can already drop 4os. Normal act5 and above should do the trick.
not in normal. only 3os can drop organically. saw 4os cs & hnalberd in nighntmare cows though.

Naturally spawned (aka monster dropped it or fell out of a chest) items on normal can never exceed 3 sockets, on nightmare 4 sockets, on hell you can get all 6 sockets.
The only way to get more than difficulty allows is from larzuk or socket recipe in the cube.

I find 3 four socket Polearms (1 Scythe, 1 Poleaxe and 1 Halberd) in a single NM rune run. By rune run, I mean farming NM Countess.
I am still farming Countess for the Sol rune at this point.

It explains monsterlvl mechanic a bit. This is why people farm Normal Cows for 4os because cows have an mlvl of 28(which usually starts midway of Act 5), meaning they always drop ilvl 28 items. If you look at the socket sheet you can see most items start getting 4 sockets at ilvl 26.
As for larzuk, he always gives the max amount of sockets an ilvl can receive on it unlike Horadric cube recipe that rolls 1-6 sockets(also taking into account max amount of sockets for ilvl). Ilvl 28 item for instance won’t get 6 sockets if it can’t get 6 sockets .
edit just in case: Also, a lot of people that ask usually are confused on what item they are looking for. You are not looking for items that drop with sockets already in them. Just regular non-magic(white item and/or ethereal) that you will add sockets to.
And this is just wrong.
