I have not been able to play these remasters ever since I bought them on launch day for one simple reason: they don’t even start for me, here it is on video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fstKelGwk0
I spent around a week talking to support through a ticket that I opened but they couldn’t help me and advised to open a thread about it instead (helpful support, that one) so I did that.
Here are my specs:
OS: Windows 11
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800x3D
GPU: RTX 4070 12 GB
Games and the OS are on an SSD
Specifics that come to mind and might matter:
- I have my CPU’s iGPU disabled in the BIOS
- My Windows language is Hungarian and my Windows user name has an “á” character in it. I mention this because there was a game a few years ago where this caused a minor problem.
Please investigate, Blizzard, I’d really like to play the game and I’m not alone with this issue.

you’re really not alone with this, i and MANY others have the same problem
it seems to just not work with windows 11, people said that putting in it on an earlier windows 10 version fixed that
i think they said that it’s not really supporting 32x bit anymore, blizzard really needs to finally make them 64x bit
I play on windows 11 and it works most of the time, had a day with 3 blue screens, but that’s it.

some also said that’s because of a to updatet driver and/or a to new… graphic card? i guess? i forgot to say that. i dont really know what exactly they meant, i dont talk IT language but some had issues and others had solutions for them and i’m just trying to spread these solutions but i don’t really understand what they were talking about
doesn’t change the fact that wacraft 1 and 2 need to become (or “run in”?) 64x bit
There is only one problem with that notion: I have a ton of 32 bit apps installed and they all work perfectly on Windows 11. The War 1 and 2 remasters being this bad at launch is shocking to me exactly because I’m the kind of person who plays a lot of old games and it’s very rare that I see anything that’s just refusing to run.
Warcraft 1 and 2 GOG releases? They work perfectly. The DOSBox based Battle.net releases that came along with the remasters. Yup, they run. Every other game I have on Battle.net? They work without issue and of course they do, why wouldn’t they? Windows 11 is perfectly fine for gaming most of the time though right now there is a bit of an issue with Ubisoft games which is stopping me from updating to 24H2.
I don’t know what happened here but honestly the only reason why I didn’t refund these remasters was that I’m curious how long it will take the fix them because the problem is sure as heck ain’t my machine. I’m never buying another Blizzard product on launch.
EDIT: Pulled up the Event Viewer to see if any crash was logged. There was but I can’t post the link to the screenshot of it that I uploaded because Blizzard forums are great nowadays (why are we going backwards?).
I guess I’ll just paste the details in text:

Have you try to analyze and repair?
I had the message error “couldn’t load texture” by chance I tried to analyze and repair…after WC I and II started to work!
Yeah, that was one of the first things that I tried.
Anyway new hotfixes came out today, they didn’t fix the game, they still won’t start.
I’m experiencing similar. The game launches to a black screen. Both versions ran fine one time then did this. Scan and Repairs done, reinstalls done, nothing seems to work. Black screen comes up, if you click on it, it tells you it’s Not Responding. It also only seems to be the Remastered versions with this problem.
Warcraft 1 sometimes crashes when loading a mission but plays fine if it manages to load.
Warcraft 2 just randomly crashes during loading and during play.
Neither seem to have any discernible trigger.
Just updating this thread, game (both War1 and War2) STILL wont start, just like ur video, only difference is im on Windows 10
Could you share with me your system specs? Anything that comes to mind really, sadly I have no idea why the games don’t work so anything can be relevant. CPU? GPU? State of drivers? Any software in particular that you use frequently and think might not be super common? Your system language?
Sadly it’s becoming clear that the people who are working on this (if there are even people still working on the remasters) are either unwilling or failing to fix this shockingly huge issue so we might be on our own when it comes to fixing their broken, shamefully put together product.
I have the same problem. Has anyone found a solution?
Same issue for me via Parallels. Will they ever fix it ? At least I got a refund within 3 days they know its broken and rather refund before troubleshooting
Windows Compatibility Issues: Many users on Windows 10/11 face startup failures, including black screens or crashes after clicking “Play” 12.
Try running the game as Administrator (right-click shortcut → Properties → Compatibility → Run as Admin) 2.
Adjust High DPI settings (Properties → Compatibility → Change high DPI settings → Check “Override scaling” → Select “Application”) 10.
the issue is that the game uses opengl 4.6, which is no longer supported in windows 10.
it does not run on my updated windows 10 pc either. it runs on my outdated windows 10 pc however. a good solution from the developers would be to switch from opengl to direct 3d. until then however you can try to roll back to an earlier build. though if you have windows 7 or 8.1 you can also run it there. i even tried to install opengl and the latest version of opengl(4.6) can not run in the later builds of windows 10.
New patch just came out for WarCraft 2 and the game STILL WON’T START. What the heck are they doing, it’s been almost 5 months!
OpenGl 4.6 was just a ridiculous choice for a new game tbh. At this point we have to assume that blizzard is completely clueless when it comes to programming games.
Not to mention that the assets for these games were partly made with AI tools and look the part…
I wish Vicarious Visions would have been hired to create these remakes as well…
WC3 on mac is also a complete joke. And these W1+2 remasteres are completely unplayable on mac because blizzard relies on an ancient API nobody uses anymore in their new games.
What a joke.
I have no idea if OpenGL 4.6 is causing any issues or not, I have plenty of OpenGL apps, all of them work flawless except for these two pieces of garbage. I just don’t understand how is it possible that this bug exists since launch and there isn’t even a post about it acknowledging that it’s a thing and that they are trying to fix it. These are 30 year old games, come on, a modern machine not being able to run them is more embarrassing than Overwatch 2’s entire product history.
there is different versions of opengl. this uses the latest version, which is not compatible with later versons of windows 10. windows 10 even told me when i tried to install it. they should add vulkan support to this, so that it runs in updated versions of windows. that or direct x 12 support. not that they need to remove the opengl 4.6 support. they just need to have more options.
I did a clean Windows 11 install upgrading from version 23H2 to 24H2 because my original OS install was a few years old at this point so it was time. Both remasters work now for some reason so I guess as a last resort of troubleshooting it’s worth to try 24H2 / simply just doing a clean Windows install if anybody is facing the same crash bug.
