I recall Doom/Quake where the community iterated on the game engine (which needs maintenance and improvement) while one still had to buy the game to experience the original graphics. In this way, you turn complaining fans into contributors and get even more original game sales (that’s what the fans want in the first place). Is it a bad model for WC?

search for War1gus for warcraft 1. it’s very good but needs a lot more work done by the open source community to fix their issues, they have a github where ppl work together.
