I just installed Diablo 1 and my CD player keeps running loudly while it plays. It does not do this with other CDs. Is there a way to make it so it runs with no CD?
D1 was recently rereleased by Good Old Games. It’s been updated to work on modern machines and it can now be downloaded via a digital downloader for $10.
I made a virtual CD .iso with ImgBurn back in the day, I mount when I want to play. (with Daemon Tools back in the day, natively in Windows 10, right click on the iso, ‘Mount’)
Only need to copy the DIABDAT.MPQ from the disc to the install directory.
Best thing to do is to pick up the GOG version for $10 or less. It includes Hellfire, and it has several options that clean up some of the graphical bugs and make the game work smoothly and disc free. Classic Battle.net still works too–I go on for a little bit each week!
For my future reference as this popped up in google search and not quite right(for me and I may have to do it again later). I figured it out after skimming through an OLD 99 trainer readme but they referenced having to change the register. It’s not the same directory for win10 but similar enough.
- copy the DIABDAT.MPQ from your disc to your game directory
- open regedit
- arrow V HKEY_USERS
- You wil see 5ish S-1-5-* folders
- search though those S-1-5- folders for the software folders. You are looking for the Blizzard Entertainment folder in 1 of those software folders.(mine was second from the bottom) arrow V when you do.
- arrow V the Archives folder in that Blizzard entertainment folder.
- in the Archives folder you will see a DiabloCD register.
-right click choose modify. - Change the location from your CD directory to your game directory.
- and done. Close up every thing and test it out. Worked out for me.
