Internet is down... so I can't play single player wc1?

Since when does Warcraft 1 require an internet connection to even start? My internet is down so I figured I’d play some wc1, but I’m immediately met with the “Lost connection to Battlenet” error, wtf?

I already paid for and installed the game, why tf does it require Battlenet to run?

Hey Zifnab,

Are you talking about the remastered version?

If so, DRM. It’s a reality of modern gaming.

Internet access listed as a requirement on the shop page.

I don’t think it is a reality of modern gaming. I don’t need an internet connection to play most single-player steam games, including 2023’s game of the year Baldur’s Gate 3. Basically every (single-player) game on my steam deck I can play in the car without an internet connection as well.

So telling me “DRM” as an answer for why a remastered game from the 90s requires a permanent internet connection is just a cop-out. Maybe it can check the first time you load the game; but there’s no reason for it to require a permanent internet connection, as there is no internet-connected behavior associated with the game.

I wasn’t meaning to say all modern games use DRM. I was saying is that DRM exists in modern gaming. And Bliz chose to include online only play as DRM.

DRM itself is the reason. It’s not so much about being able to play on or offline.
