I had real ID enabled at one point, but then got more serious about privacy once my real name started popping up on friends’ streams.
After the most recent maintenance, I can now see the full names of friends from the client splash page, and they can see mine.
The problem only pertains to people who were real ID friends when I previously had it enabled. People that I never had as real ID friends cannot see my full name, and vice versa.
This is happening to me too. This is a serious issue as it can inadvertently dox people on their friends list.
Under account Privacy, I verified that I have “Enable Real ID” set to “Disabled”. For the record, I’ve always had this set.
A person on my friends list (OOKirby#1852) reported to me that in place of my battletag, they are able to see my real name. This is super concerning. He sent me and I confirmed that my name is being displayed.
Here is an image from my friend with my Real ID being showing in his chat (imgur link: /a/l1ncIjB) and another image of his friends list (imgur link: /a/eNDQpJf). FYI, the reason my name is so much shorter on the friend list image is because I changed my name on my account right after he told me about it.
I have this issue as well, as do some of my friends.
Originally real ID was the only way to add cross platform friends. This was changed some years later to allow for “battle tag” friends.
The people that are showing up with their real names in the battle.net desktop app are these older friends whom I set up real-ID friends with years ago.
I currently have Real-ID disabled, but the full real name of these older real-ID friends is showing.
Interestingly, when you click the social list on the desktop app, which brings up the separate smaller window, these people are showing the battle tag names. its only on the ‘splash page’ for wow that the real ID names are showing.
I have the same problem. I opened a ticket, and got a response from Game Master Laenowatar saying they are working on it. Apparently only friends added before you turned off real-id can see your info, but this is still bad.
Blizz, make sure you add this test case to your unit tests so this regression can’t happen again.
This same issue is happening to my husband and I. We have been chatting with Blizzard for the past 2 days and still no resolve. Their chat says they can’t do anything about it and it will only get fixed if we post here.
How much time will go by that our personal information is being leaked? How many streamers will be swatted and killed by police because of this? When it comes to personal information and privacy it should take NO time to fix these issues. This is not being taken as seriously as it should and for the FACT that it hasn’t been publicly acknowledged is extremely concerning. If they don’t say anything about it people have no way to protect themselves.
This is happening to my wife and I as well. Blizz chat and support is worthless making us go here to resolve their issue.
STREAMERS BEWARE!!! Your real name can be leaked very easily here. If Someone has your real name and knows the state you are in, a $5 public record search will render information you DO NOT want people to have, like your address and opening you up to “SWATTING” You can thank Blizzard for that Hopefully you don’t get killed. My wife and I both posed this question to support and they only referred us both to here…so disappointing their lack of care toward leaking peoples personal info that could get them killed.
This is a very serious issue and it is very concerning how little Blizzard cares or has put a mechanism in place for better reporting or handling a personal information leak as bad as this.
This has also been confirmed in many ways no matter the settings and in many of the games…what more do you need to acknowledge this issue and to let people know so they can protect themselves. This is insane and regrettable, the way these huge companies treat our personal info. We reported this days ago, I still have an open ticket…SMH
This is happening to me and my girlfriend as well! We’re thinking someone broke something? I hadn’t noticed the real id settings to show names in bnet and games before now. If that wasn’t the case it’s just Something Broke and it needs to be fixed immediately. Real ID was a HORRIBLE idea from the start that countless people didn’t want. I was sent into a panic when I saw my and my friend’s real names. Nevermind the privacy, this could be a harassment issue (the MAIN THING people brought up when real id was first mentioned!).
