Cannot connect to battle.net in Diablo II help

Hey everyone, I just purchased Diablo 2 today (2/26/21) and cannot connect to battle.net. I have read that using a VPN can ban your account for 2 weeks. I was using a VPN during the download of the game and during my initial launch/connect. Even with the VPN off I cannot connect. How can I tell if I have been banned?

Hello inerax,

If you have a VPN active when attempting to connect to Battle.net in Diablo 2, it will unfortunately result in an automatic two-week restriction. Attempting to connect again with the VPN still active will reset the duration. The length is two weeks down to the exact second.

Since the restriction for VPN usage is based upon your public IP at the time of the restriction, there are a couple of ways around the restriction instead of waiting:
1: Obtain a different public IP address. Power cycling your ISP modem has a chance of obtaining a different IP. Sometimes you have to leave it off for a while for it to work. (leaving it off overnight for example) This is not guaranteed to work, as some ISP’s force an IP on your modem for a certain period of time regardless if it’s on or not.
2: Temporarily use a different internet service provider until the restriction expires. (For example, using your phone as a hotspot)

You can google “what is my ip” to see if your public IP has changed.

Be sure to turn that VPN off before playing!

Another two-week restriction reason worth mentioning is trying to play while on a business-class internet service connection. (work, hotel/motel, public wifi) This restriction is based on the Blizzard account that your game keys are bound to, so obtaining a different public IP has no effect.

Looks like it works with my phone. Damn that is too bad. All I wanted to do was play some Diablo 2 this weekend. My cell service is crap here and I doubt it will work right. Thanks for the quick response.

Edit: I was able to download the patch with my phone. Then right to the disconnected message.

I hear ya, Diablo 2 is awesome. Hope it works for you!

So, I have attempted to connect with multiple different IP addresses. at one point I downloaded a patch but still cannot connect.

5+ IP’s tried
Phone hot spot tried
Cannot connect to open battle.net

Still getting disconnected from battle.net.

Any suggestions?

Does your game version report 1.14D on the bottom left of the main menu?

Yes, it does show 1.14D

Should I be able to connect to open battle.net or can that also get VPN banned?

You can always try Open bnet, I’m not sure if that is VPN banned because I think Open bnet is literally just a match making service that connects the users to each other.

Even with open bnet I still get the same disconnected error.

Firewall off
ports forwarded

Am lost :frowning:

Hmm, I haven’t needed to forward ports when I’ve played.

They ban based off IP address? Not off of CD key/account?

I have tried so many IP’s and keep getting the same results.

Cannot even connect to open battle.net.

Are you trying to connect from a business class connection? (work, hotel/motel, public wifi. Something other than a residential connection)

No, I have CenturyLink fiber at my house.

I don’t know… It almost sounds like a business class connection restriction. You said you got it to work once from your cellphone hotspot?

It did a patch download. The gargoyle with the red HP glass thing that shows up during the download came up.

But then it disconnected and I could not connect again, even through my cell phone.

This game can be a friggin nightmare sometimes to get working right. You need to have a Blizzard rep give some insight onto what is going on. You can try submitting a ticket:

https://us.battle.net/support/en/help/contact/354/ticket

Just add a blank txt file for the msinfo/dxdiag since they don’t apply here.

Add a link to this thread as well in the ticket so they have more details.

Thanks for the link. I will submit a ticket

Thanks I’ll give it a try. Your right about the nightmare. I was installing it on my main puter and suffered a power outage during install. Nightmare is a good term for what I went though.
