BNet update steals window focus

So the last few times BNet has had an update available, while I’m playing WoW, it would just pop up and immediately tell me that this update is so dire (/s), I must at this moment in time be alerted of its presence. Now this is fine if I’m not doing anything, but when I’m in the middle of a raid or horrific vision, one misstep caused by something like this can result in a wipe that was entirely not my fault. Thankfully both times, I wasn’t mid-combat, though I was in an HV both times.

I’d like to ask how we can fix this issue since I can’t find anything in the options that lets me turn it off. It’s simply awful and needs to stop happening ASAP. If I can’t have confidence that the app won’t randomly pop up at any given time, that’s really messed up.

Hey there,

Is the pop up that’s taking focus the Windows User Account Control (the box that makes you type your windows login) or the App’s prompt to restart after an update? If possible please provide a screenshot of it so we may better understand the problem. Screenshots may be provided through third party image sharing websites. Example: imgur*com/abc123

Thanks!

Sorry I don’t have a screenshot (since it happens irregularly; if it happens again, I’ll be sure to get one), but it’s definitely not UAC, it’s specifically the BNet launcher popping up, going dark and giving me a notice that it has an update available (and needs to restart).

Also for the record, there was an update last I checked on BNet today while I wasn’t doing anything. Funny how when I’m doing nothing, no notice, but while playing WoW, it steals focus for the notice.

Hey, Polarthief! The restart should not be causing it to steal focus away. Let’s try addressing the application first. Could you check the version of the Blizzard Application? Go to Blizzard > Settings in the App, and the Settings window should prompt. At the bottom left corner, you should see the Version number. The latest version should be 1.20.3.11914.

If the version is different, let’s try cleaning the Blizzard Application.

  1. Uninstall the application
    • If you cannot uninstall the application, follow step 2, skip this step and add %programfiles(x86)% This the default install location. If its not there, you will need to search the computer files.
  2. Press Windows key + R and type in %temp%
  3. Delete anything related to Blizzard or Battle.net
  4. Do the same for %programdata%, %localappdata%, %appdata%
  5. Reinstall the application

Note: These steps can cause the Blizzard Application to forget the game install locations. The games can be located by clicking on “Locate this game” next to the play button or by going to Settings (Blizzard Logo at top left), then Game Install/Update and running “Scan for Games.”

If it continues, do you know if you have multiple drives on the system? Where is the Blizzard Application installed?

I can confirm this happens to me too, on the latest battle.net launcher. While playing WoW, the launcher window pops up every couple hours or so, stealing focus while I’m playing. I’ve resorted to exiting the launcher from the system tray so I’m not interrupted and it makes me want to make my own shortcut so I don’t use the launcher anymore.

There is an option in the setting menu to close Bnet when you launch a game, so you don’t need to do it manually.

Thanks! I didn’t know about that. That’s really helpful

I have the same problem:
When the battleNet client is running and has detected that a new update is available, it will create a Windows pop-up dialog box that steals your focus and asks whether you want to allow the app battleNet launcher to make changes to your device. This even pulls you out of full screen games (including non-battleNet games of course). It causes me to die or lose or get distracted in fast multiplayer online games.

Expected behavior: do not steal focus. Only show the popup dialog after I clicked an UPDATE button in the battleNet app.

Workaround: Always close battleNet if not using it (so it does not annoy me in NON-battleNet games), and check the option to auto-close it when a battle.net game is launched (so it does not annoy me in battleNet games). Disable start-up on login.

Side note: this forum seems to have issues with detecting links. It prevented me from submitting this 4 times saying I cannot include links, even though I had none. I edited all occurences of dots which were not followed by a space and now it works. Nice. ;D I guess a lot of people would not bother and just move on instead of going through this.
