Battle Net game downloads slows down to a crawl

Hi,

I’ve been trying to reinstall WoW and D3 for over a week now without any successs.
When installing and downloading, the download start out fast, maxing out my connection (100 Mbps) but eventually the download speed suddenly slows down to around 0-50 KB/s.
It’s not about me being impatient while files are being installed either as even leaving it on for ~14 hours overnight gave me zero progress on the installation/download.

Uninstalling the games and restarting leads to identical behaviour every time.
The download speed starts out at maximum but then always slows down at the same place, when WoW has downloaded about 35 GB and when D3 has downloaded about 6 GB.

All other internet related activity works fine.
I don’t have any data caps on my connection.
I have tried reinstalling battle net several times.
I have tried reinstalling the games several times.
I have tried to delete Battle net and Agent cache in ProgramData.
I have tried to delete Battle net and Blizzard files in %appdata%, %localappdata% and %temp.
I have tried to leave the download running for over 10 hours once download speed has slowed down.
I have tried to restart my router/modem.
I have tried to connect my computer directly into the modem.
I have tried to downgrade my network drives (they are already the latest version).
I have tried to repair the games from battle net.
I have tried to pause/resume the updates.
I have tried to restart battle net.
I have tried to restart my computer.
I have opened and forwarded all relevant ports ports in my router.
I have scanned my computer for malware.
I have turned off my firewall.
I have both turned off Win Defender and made exceptions for Bnet and Agent.
I have unchecked “automatically detect settings” in LAN settings in internet options.
I have set “Secondary Log-on” service to Automatic.
I have tried the “Destiny 2” trick where you rename/move game folder, install from scratch and before you click OK you move it back.
I have tried to install the games on different harddrives, both the default C:\Program Files (x86) and another secondary drive.
I have tried with network bandwidth limits in battle net both at 0 (unlimited) and something very high (99999).
I have run battle net as an administrator every time it starts.
I dont use any proxies.
I have the latest versions of my web browser and Adobe flash/reader.
I use a network cable, not Wifi.
I have flushed my DNS cache.
I have tried different DNS servers.

Basically I followed every step in these articles:

  • some extra articles and stuff people posted in forums.

Nothing has worked. Whats next for me to try?

Hey, Turibur! Thank you for trying so many steps on your own. From the behavior it sounds like firewall, security, and network is the cause for the slow download, something may be throttling or blocking the connection.

To narrow the issue down, trying a different connection like a mobile hotspot can help if there is a local network or connection routing issue. A VPN is also an alternative to reroute the connection and DNS. This does not change the local network, however. A VPN is not supported and not one that we can provide recommendations for, but it may be an option to try if you feel comfortable with doing so.

Due to the complexity of the issue and all that you’ve tried already, it’s recommended to contact our Technical Support team so that we can work with you individually to resolve the download issue. Could you include this forums link, system files, and a WinMTR test to the patch servers, us.patch.battle.net?

I may have found a solution to this… well, it worked for me.

Go to Task manager and then processes,
And locate a process called Relevant Knowledge, and end the processes with that name. Your download should immediately speed up.
Not sure if Relevant knowledge will be there for everyone but if it is, look into removing it completely as it’s malware.

To anyone experiencing the same problem but no “Relevant Knowledge”
Check anyway, I found a different Malware called Premiere Opinion.
Saw it in my hidden Icons in the corner running in the back ground. I tried ending process and it kept re-opening. so I scanned for malware.

Just a note I am still on windows 7 and have not yet moved to windows 10 so if your windows is still out of date beware and think about making the change. I am now.

This Thread was super helpful! Thanks and I am glad we figured it out!!
