Account got compromised stuck on what to do

I am messaging for my brother. He logged into his email today and noticed that someone has requested to change his Activision Email and before he got a chance to say no this was not me the email was already changed. They then used his Activision account to go and change his blizzard account username, password and email completely locking him out of his account and his owned games. The account username and password has been changed and the new email is unknown. We do know what the account ID is since I have him on my friends list. He has $240 of games on that account and will be very sad if he ends up loosing all of these games and money. Please help us out here we really have no idea on how to get it back. We both are stuck on what to do and hope we can get his account back.

I don’t work for Blizz or Activision so honestly don’t know how the two accounts are connected and what provisions are there for change. I only know how the Blizzard specific Bnet accounts work.

I know for Blizzard accounts the only way to change email is to have access to the old one, but I don’t know if it works the same for Activision connected accounts.

Your Brother needs to put in a ticket directly with Blizzard to get control of his Battlenet account back. That may include submitting Govt issued ID.

This article has tips and a link to the Ticket Submission option.

He will probably need to submit ID so please read the guidelines very carefully about how to do that and to learn what they do when done (delete it). He should also delete it off his devices when done too. That way if a device is compromised his ID does not get stolen.

What is MOST important though is the first tip in the support article. He needs to figure out how they got his info and at the very least make sure his computer is free of virus and malware programs. Then change the passwords to his important accounts.

When he gets his Blizz account back he will likely want to put a digital Authenticator on it. Those are free. Make sure he writes down the Restore Code and Serial number so if he loses his phone or gets a software reset he can put his Auth back on a device again.

Thanks for the info! I created a support ticket already and am just waiting on a response from them. I used this account to create the ticket since he was locked out of his account when the password changed. I’m going to submit his drivers license as an ID that has his name and matching billing address on it.

Blizzard normally only deals with the registered account holder and they don’t allow account sharing, even between family.

The one exception is a parent who can set up an account for a minor child they are the legal guardian of.

You may find that HE has to submit the ticket. He can make his own free Bnet account to do so in his own name. Of course, it will need a different email than the old one.

ALSO - when he gets his account back, I strongly suggest he select a brand new email that he uses only for Bnet. One with secondary authentication is good. Gmail does offer that. Someone new tries to get into the email it sends a code to your phone.

He was using Gmail with 2FA that is the thing. So my ticket I created on my account for him is invalid? I’ll help him setup an account tomorrow if that’s the case. He is just very frustrated and sad at the moment since he lost all of his games and progress.

How long on average does it take to get the ticket reviewed?

Again, I don’t work there. I do know most of the Blizzard staff posts I see instruct folks that they will only deal with the account holder. However, I have seen exceptions made when both are in the same house. It will simply be up to CS to tell you what they will accept so you have to wait for an official reply.

With the Pandemic, work from home, and the release of WoW Shadowlands Blizzard tickets are running 2-4 days on average right now.

The time you see on the ticket is the LONGEST in queue, not a specific time for yours. Those long ones are for specialists.

Game access is a priority so they will do what they can to get to it and get him back playing.

It is VERY essential he figure out how they changed his Bnet account info. That is very concerning.

Yes it really is. I’m going over to do a full scan of his system as well as make sure remote desktop is not enabled.
