I used to play a warrior named Thanros on…Executus I believe it was? Well, this is the story about how I became a GM…very briefly.
It all starts when my account was jacked and I logged in to find all of my gear stripped. I went through the normal process and had a GM restore it all. I remember talking to him and he told me to log out for a bit. When I logged back on I had all of my gear back minus enchants, and the most epic gift of all. I had a tag.
I was both excited and a bit scared. Obviously I didn’t want to get banned for cheating or anything, but I was a GM! First a few guildmates started feeding me GM commands to see just how powerful I was. Long story short, I was not. Nothing worked, all I had was the tag. I quickly returned to reality and decided to open another ticket to have it removed, I didn’t want my account getting banned.
I started having fun in chat. Posted LF39M AQ40 and got swarmed with whispers. Chat blew up when people saw a GM talking. I also got whispers from people I knew outside of my guild asking how I became a GM. It was good times, but it quickly got old.
After a bit of peer pressure from my guildmates, I decided to venture out into the world to deal out justice to the Horde, not that I had any justice to deal, but they wouldn’t know that. I made my way to Kargath and stumbled across two horde…and I died, I was a prot warrior, he was a mage. This is where things got good. As I walked back to my corpse and get in range of the two horde, who were still near my body, I see them talking. It’s not that I see them talking, It’s that I can understand them! Finally, my ascension to GMhood came with power. The conversation was hilarious. The guy who killed me was being berated by the other for killing a GM. The guy that had killed me was freaking out because he didn’t know, and he had just killed a GM.
I spawn back in try talking to them. At this point I’m not even sure they will be able to understand me. I start off with angrily asking the guy why he killed me. I quickly learn they can understand me. The guy that killed me starts apologizing and I again get asked tons of questions. What am I doing, why am I here, what is the meaning of life, am I going to ban them. I start to attract a crowd, at one point a rogue walked up and started attacking me before being immediately scolded by the crowd and told to stop. He also hadn’t paid attention to my tag and started apologizing. We talked for a bit and I eventually let them all kill me, it was hilarious how many people wanted to be able to say they killed a GM. They murdered me, I ran back to my body, we say farewell, and hearth home.
At this point it was getting close to raid time so I started heading towards Silithus. I get to Cenarion Hold which is hopping. Several Alliance and Horde raiding guilds are gathering up to head towards AQ. I continue my moment of celebrity, and begin acting as translator. Everyone was wanting to send messages to certain members of the opposite factions, be they enemies or frenemies.
We still had some time before we started our raid, but I found out one of the horde guilds we were on good terms with was planning to summon a couple of the Abyssal Lords before they started their raid. At this point there was only about 10 or so members from my guild there, so we head off with them to help them out. We end up mind controlling their tank and filling him up with paladin buffs. I’m pretty sure this is the first time anything like this had happened, because their guild went crazy. I was getting bombarded with requests for paladin buffs. We buffed several other players before their GM told them they needed to get going so they could make their raid time. We helped them kill their bosses, not that they needed it, and wished them luck in AQ.
I returned to Cenarion Hold to wait on the rest of our guild to start showing up. I’m pretty sure I was contacted by a GM before our raid started and asked to log off. When I logged back on I was saddened to see that I had lost my GM tag. I wish I had kept my screenshots from back then. I had a few from my adventures as a GM, but even in IRL I’m not big on keeping, or even taking photos.
So that is it, I apologize for my story telling abilities, or lack thereof. Just wanted to share it and see if anyone else had any bizarre stories from their time in vanilla.
