You know you are old when

When you recognize a song on the radio, because it’s a remake of one that was new when you were growing up.
Same holds true for a remake of a movie or TV show that was originally in B&W.

I still have the first 4 “Weird Al” Yankovic albums on vinyl, along with Michael Jackson’s “Bad”. I even joined the very first Weird Al fan club, and became a “Close Personal Friend of Al”, or CPFoA, but have never met him in person.

On a side note, I was going to say, when you see a new actor who looks familiar, and you find out it’s the grandkid of an actor your age. Speaking of, did anyone else ever notice how much Chris Metzen looks like Robert Goulet?

Metzen looks nothing like him.

Perhaps a better comparison here:

But I’ll admit I don’t see a really close resemblance.

Then it shifted into the Atari.

“I never played those. I was hooked on Pinball.”

Yeah I see the resemblance.

I am old when I remember when the movie 300 was a big deal.

Nowadays it seems that it is forgotten.

NULL pointers of the mind

An excerpt from the novel telling the story of a geek veteran and his battles with posttraumatic stress.

After all these years he would still sometimes wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat screaming “Q! Q!” the memory of grep, AWK and shell scripts that just wouldn’t work still echoing in his head as he desperately tried to grope his way back to reality.

He would take to drink at these times trying to exorcize the daemons from his mind, but to no avail, glancing at the clock to see how long till dawn, all he saw was Cronos leering back at him.

At these times she would try to comfort him and bring him back to the present “it’s OK” she would say pressing cool compresses to his fevered brow “we have windows now, it’s all GUIs”.

“X-Windows?” he mumbled. “No no just … Windows”, she would respond, carefully avoiding the name of the Monster of Redman; “it’s all over now, nobody has written a 42 character command line in years, remember Visual programming? Put the bottle away and come back to bed”.

“My god I saw it with my own eyes” he moaned “the Wall Street Weenies got poor old Borland, and they almost killed Apple! It was horrible!“ “That’s all in the past now” she reassured him “Apple makes telephones and music boxes now remember? COBAL, FORTRAN, Fourth, Even C and Pascal, these things only exist in history texts, hell even history texts are history it’s all wikis now, try to forget what’s done and gone and concentrate on the present, we need you here and now”

I think this is pretty good. It isn’t about butt, if that’s any consolation

I don’t know about other kids, but I took a bike on the beltway, and somehow didn’t get myself grounded. The only time I got grounded was when I went to DC. Alone, and I didn’t text my mom for two whole hours. (In hindsight, I deserved that)

If that isn’t freedom, IDK what is, considering I still have to wait years to get my license.

Also, phones aren’t ALL bad. Without a phone, I would have been SOL for a lot of my “traveling alone in DC at 12” experiences.

Reading what you posted, I can hear the dial up! I wonder if theres a ring tone for phones that sounds like that :joy:

…or if you watched “The Wizard of Oz” on a black and white TV, and didn’t know that part of it was in color. Also, the fact that you had to wait a whole year to see it again, because there was no such thing as a VCR yet. Then, when you finally see it on a color TV… O! M! G!

When you make a kid laugh with a bad joke but not a good joke

Or

When you trick younger people into thinking they are old to make yourself feel young again
