Most of the content shouldn’t be geared towards min/maxers
There should be a very niche part of the game only they can access though - probably only in the way of exclusive cosmetics, but nonetheless that drive for the best should be recognized and rewarded.
Not really. In Legion the hamster wheel kind of existed, but M+ gave decent AP so I just sort of played the game and my char was up to date.
BFA was the first expansion that encouraged unrealistic amounts of time needed to be sunk into activities I don’t enjoy, such as islands, warfronts, and then with essences sending me into random BGs until my brain rotted.
In Legion we had world quests, true, but near the end of the xpac I found myself off the hamster wheel. I had all the legendaries I wanted, I had all the AP I needed, I could just log in and enjoy the game.
In BFA the final patch I’m still grinding dailies to get the tokens to grind visions to get the tokens to put corruptions and sockets on my gear. It’s just too much crap, not enough fun.
You pick a class which totally puts you “into a situation where our choice of one affects the other”. This is a non issue for people for some reason or another. Yet change that to covenant and now it is like Blizzard started World War III. These types of choices that force you to pick something that has lasting impact on another area of the game are normal for an RPG, ARPG, MMORPG, etc. Now I am with you all that using a temporary ‘borrowed’ power is not the most ideal way to do this. I would much rather them lock in specialization first and even talent choices next. I would trade the covenant lock for the spec and talent lock but somehow do not think the players against covenant locks want ANY locks. That is bad for game design and am glad Blizzard is at least forcing someone to choose something, though I wish it was a different something.
Who would it hurt to give alternate progression paths? Why can’t I get worthwhile AP from m+ or raid or pvp instead of world quests and island expeditions?
It isn’t really about need but whether you should. To me the answer is yes, to a point (I don’t sim so I guess that makes me a lazy min-maxer). Thing is, don’t you want to do good dps with a team? You don’t just want a carry do you? I occasionally deviate on talents and whatnot but generally I do my best for my spec to make sense.
I’m sorry I didn’t quote your following paragraph, as it explains why min-maxing isn’t inherently wrong.
But, the point of these changes, for everyone else reading, is to cut down the NUMBER of forceful players within the walled garden. As this subset of the community gains more players, their power to force a given play style upon the masses is increased. These are ACTUALLY the players who kick a mage for wanting to bring frost into a +8, for berating the paladin for being ret instead of holy; the havoc demon hunter for not taking demon blades, even though a brain dead passive for resource gen is hideously boring.
Blizzard is gutting access to the walled garden across the board, specifically to cut down the number of players who can engage in this degenerate behavior. The problem is, the min/maxers, the players who ARE well adjusted human beings, are being caught in the line of fire. They simply enjoy pushing power for its own sake. And it’s truly unfortunate that that their presence alone enables the toxic forceful crowd. The smaller the toxic crowd is, and the crowd of good folks who unwillingly enable them, the less able the toxic jerks are to force their mandates upon the masses.
Unfortunately, as the saying goes, the bad apple spoils the bunch. Or to be a little more expletive, a single piece of rat s*** fouls the entire soup.
That’s great that you feel this way. That’s an excellent way to play if you enjoy it. I’m sure you help your groups plenty. The problem is, when players force others to play exactly the same way.
A key group leader can do whatever he wants with his group.
If he wants to form the group which makes the key as smooth and easy as possible then that’s up to him. Why are you trying to force your mantra down his throat? Fire very obviously better than Frost.
It doesn’t matter what key it is, it’s his choice.
If he wants to be a metaslave, that’s his choice.
Jeez for a group of people who praise meaningful choice some of you guys sure miss the mark.
