The writing. That’s it. Get someone who has better ideas for the lore than to just keep ratcheting up everything to DBZ levels.
The biggest issue people have with the systems is because they’re bored. The game had objectively worse systems in the past, but people remember them fondly because the story of the game was entertaining. Yes, it wasn’t Henrik Ibsen, but even schlock can be entertaining. And when players are entertained the systems through which they get their entertainment matter much much less.
But when the players are bored, they have time to nitpick every little detail and magnify minor issues.
