Midnightes stood there just outside of the inn in Dornogal, and even though it was noon and the sun was glaring at everyone who dared venture outside, tendrils of darkness and void crowded everything she could see. Waves of luminescent indigo cascaded over their repulsive violet surface. The temperature seemed to drop like a heavy stone, though it was the height of summer, before the creature stepped into view, its heavy cloak soaked with the Void’s power, and shadows obscuring its face. Midnightes couldn’t move as it pulled out a staff topped with gaping eyes —
“NO!” She sat up in a daze. Not the nightmares again. Not this time. The inside of the cave she had camped in was a dull gray, not the phosphoresent, blinding purple of the the dream.
No. This was NOT the now!
It hadn’t made any sense. Since… Her only memory of a land far away, Midnightes could not remember. When she reached for memories, they had been lost to nothingness. She couldn’t even remember her real name.
Flashbacks never ended well. She had remembered a land shrouded in mist and another scarred by fel, and spirits scorched by shadowed flame once, but both memories would not come back until now.
Focus on the now. Where you are. Don’t lose control.
The now. The echoes of her thoughts brought her back. Midnightes sat against a rough rock in the Telogrus Rift. Until now, it had offered comfort. But recently, that had changed. And the visions had came for her.
