Because Elitist Jerks run the company and care 1% about the story and 99% about parses. Every now and then…something good slips by the raider superiority complex and we get things like the Old dwarf/dragon, Blue Dragonflight questline, and Turtles making it to water.
Too real, the last comic they made with all the faction leaders holding hands and drinking together by a fire for winter veil just seemed so Disney to me that it makes me not want to play retail at all lol
How about the not a BBQ, but is a BBQ cookout after Fryakk died and the Nelfs got a treehouse again. Everyone was there with balloons and snacks.
Back in my day, this was the ending of a Warcraft expansion. Death of entire cities. Zombies. Broken continents. Destroyed towns. Shrines desecrated. Oceans polluted. Roads made of space goat bones…
Now we get
No grit, no war, no terror, no fear, just hug a thon, sending grandpa stone dwarf off to forever retire by the sea
I didn’t say they didn’t explore it. My point was that people who say there was nothing more to do with Arthas after Wrath ignored that there was clearly something to do.
And my second point was that Blizzard ultimately did explore it - in a horrible manner. These are not mutually exclusive points. There was naturally more to do with Arthas, but what they did was unbelievably stupid.
I was not asking what Shadowlands did with Arthas. I’m saying that, prior to Shadowlands, it was a natural plot thread to explore what had happened to Arthas’s soul. I disagreed with posts expressing that there was nothing more that should be done with Arthas after ICC.
However, exploring that plot thread of what happened to Arthas did not require us traveling to the afterlife itself, because we regularly deal with spirits and souls and those types of plotlines within Azeroth itself. But Blizzard decided to have us visit the afterlife itself as an entire expansion setting, then they took a natural plot thread (what happened to Arthas) and mishandled it exceptionally badly.
That was after ICC and prior to shadowlands. Literally the moment Arthas died Uther and Devos took his soul and dropped it into the maw. When we started shadowlands his soul had already been there for many years.
The Uther plotline with Arthas and the Maw was part of the Shadowlands plotline. When people talk about how bad the Shadowlands plotline was, that includes story details created for Shadowlands that are retconned into past expansion events.
When WC 3 happened, when Wrath of the Lich King happened, in terms of the when those things were released and written, there was no “Jailer,” there was no “Maw.” Uther joining a rebelling Kyrian to ignore the rules of Bastion and throw Arthas into the Maw rather than having him judged by the Arbiter is a plotline specifically written for Shadowlands, even if by the time our characters start the expansion, those things happened before we got there.
I genuinely don’t know what it is you’re wishing for then when you say there was more for them to “explore” with Arthas. They gave us his whole story. His is probably the most complete story of any character in the game since we had a novel going through his entire early life as well.
Certain things I understand as to why they did it despite finding them rather questionable.
The thing that really throws me off is the communities negative opinion of Shadowlands but the over the top high regard for Legion when they are almost 1:1 in terms of committing the same sins as SL.
