You’re not. This isn’t theoretical, this is happening week to week on my main in Sims. Main stat would go up a couple hundred, worst stat goes up by 700, best stat goes down by 700, 1% DPS loss. It would be CLOSE, but you wouldn’t use it. If you reforged 300 of that 700 from worst stat to best, you get a 1% gain or something, you put it on.
Reforging existed due to hit and expertise. Those are gone. Stats were weighted differently. You’d have to reforge every single piece to see any worthwhile gains now. This is what Blizzard explained to us before, during and after Warlords.
There’s nothing more to be said.
Also, hilariously, this isn’t even what the OP asked for. LOL
You don’t have it now and don’t need it. Would it be optimal? Sure. Do you need it to ever equip items? No.
This is not true at all. My CE group regularly does it when it’s sensible. Not needed for every item, but for particularly impactful items, it for sure makes sense.
Sims exist. You should always know if something is an upgrade before you get it. Relying on an addon to tell you if something is an upgrade is objectively wrong.
Reforging was very popular because it allowed people to make terrible drops work. You didn’t have to chuck higher item level gear in the garbage because its terrible secondaries outweighed the increased primary. Blizzard got rid of it because the removal of hit and expertise did away with the absolute need to hit certain stat caps, and the inclusion of multiple new secondaries muddled the water enough that reforging could no longer salvage certain stat allocations for a lot of specs.
Oh i liked reforging. I’m not one to spend hours over a spreadsheet to make my character the best but I like the variety it helped bring to being able to play different playstyles with different talents. I remember being a shaman and stacking haste to make my HoTs go crazy on raid groups, or I could go with lots of crit and I swear I would never run out of mana.
Reforging was great, in my opinion. It obviously wasn’t perfect, but I enjoyed being able to get the stats I actually needed on a gear drop that didn’t have it to start with. I’d love to convert all of that versatility into crit or mastery now.
We had reforging before and some loved it some hated it; for me it was “sim stats”, click addon, reforge without thinking. I kinda miss it but it was a gold sink also iirc.
