I’m getting the sense there’s is a lot more lore than mentioned on the wiki page I read. None of this was mentioned.
She was holding the Dark Heart in front of her, which is an artifact that Iridikron had charged with Galakrond’s endless hunger. The Dark Heart has the power to consume magical power and convert it into void/shadow energy.
Khadgar put all he had into a kamehameha, the Heart ate it, Xal’atath used the energy she siphoned from the blast and from Dalaran’s magic sources to make things go boom.
For me it’s the “I love her for all of the things I’ve hated other characters for” that makes it so amusing.
Edgy? Check
Mustache twirly? Mega check
Arrogant? Check
Wrapped in plot armor? Definitely check
By the way what people are saying with the Dark Heart is an example of the last check mark here.
No corpse and camera change before we could see more than a hand beind voided out. Anything could happen.
She’s holding an artifact that absorbs arcane power and had, up until the point of the blast, been siphoning the power from dalaran after using the nerubian invasion as a distraction, as well as tricking khadgar into moving dalaran into a position of weakness and danger by disguising herself as one of his advisors, possibly for years.
This comes from dragonflight the dawn of the infinite dungeon where it says this. The player character does two timelines here, and basically has to choose between getting the dark heart or saving Nozdormu, we save the dragon.
After snatching the dark heart, we see Xal’atath in the portal behind the evil dragon dude. Then in a later quest we go with Alleria to discover who is causing void problems and we find out Xal’atath is now in possession of the dark heart.
Yeah, you’re not tricking all of greatest magical minds on Azeroth at the same time for years lol.
Well at least there’s some explanation for her power up then. But wouldn’t khadgar know what this thing is and to hit her in the back,?
You are if you have enough plot armor.
And Xal is so thoroughly wrapped in it that it’s hard to see any character at all underneath it.
We’re in for a lot of “It was all an illusion, you didn’t actually kill me!” over the next few years.
Well, she would know how they act, and she has always kinda acted as a spy. (There is a book in the priest legion order hall that goes into the things she did before we met her) She spent legion with the spriest and seemed very interested in dalaran in her whispers.
Idk you would think so, but technically only Alleria and Locus Walker (and us) were there for the dark heart stuff, so perhaps no one told him. idk
Why not? One of the king’s most trusted advisors / members of his court was a dragon in disguise for years.
Xal’atath has up until this point felt as powerful as she is, mostly using subterfuge / bargaining to advance her plan, as well as deriving power from a magical artifact that may I remind you currently contains the essence of galakrond, who could have been an expansion level big bad in his own right.
And witness Anduin kill steal her with his recovered light power.
Can’t wait! It’s all so mysterious and unpredictable!
Well, we haven’t even seen Xal’atath’s true form, and illusions are her main power considering she is most based off a spriest. So, mind control, manipulation, and illusions would be her forte.
The elf we see is a mere illusion, so I can see that being the case.
What you are explaining, while interesting, is what was necessary to be put in place in order to give her enough plot armor to last against people that smacked Argus around.
She’s not a great villain and never really was.
Comparing Xal’atath to The Jailer is insane. She has an extensive lore history and has been built up in the background over several expansions now. The Jailer was a lame shoehorned character whipped up out of thin air with no basis whatsoever for his actions.
Crazy that they did all of that just to give us Jailer 2.0.
So?
She’s got the Dark Heart, something on par with the World Soul/Demon Soul if Netharion’s notes are to believed. And yes, they have learned their lessons. We’re not being told she’s some super tricky, manipulative mastermind. We’re being shown that: She’s been hiding under our noses for countless months. She’s tricked us into doing her dirty work. She’s manipulated Iridikron and others to do her bidding. We don’t really know her plan, true, but we actually see her working towards something, and she’s shown she’s willing and capable of doing it.
That wasn’t why the Jailer was terrible.
I guess that depends on what she actually is. A lot of people believe she is an old god after all. Which could indicate a good deal of power. (This isn’t fully proven though)
She’s not an interesting villain at all, personally I’m not a fan. But I won’t deny the existence of the lore that’s been built upon this whole time. It’s just a shame it’s been done mostly through priest stuff and side quests most people skipped and didn’t read.
