WTH is “Arcane Pulse?”

The new Midnight Arcane talent tree keeps referring to something called “Arcane Pulse” and it doesn’t appear to be a new talent. Best I can tell they just renamed Arcane Explosion to Arcane Pulse for absolutely no reason instead of actually making it a usable skill…

They’re checking if arcane players will have a pulse after these changes are released.

My god, mage is looking bad.

From the blue post:

New Talent: Arcane Pulse – Replaces Arcane Explosion. A pulse of Arcane magic erupts from underneath your target, dealing Arcane damage to all enemies within 2 yards. Damage reduced beyond 5 targets. Each Arcane Charge increases damage, radius, and mana cost.

Wowhead’s first draft of the new talent trees includes a bit more such as a base radius of 2 yards and increasing by 2 yards per arcane charge. Damage and mana cost both increased by ~100% per arcane charge, and generates 2 arcane charges.

It makes me think of a ranged version of Legion’s Arcane Explosion.

Seeing them remove Slow on top of all of the defensive changes left me shaking my head. We won’t even be able to shield our paper thin Mirror Images anymore!

It’s a new talent that replaces Arcane Explosion. It’s a 40 yard range targeted ability.

Thanks! I could have sworn looked at all the talents on the Wowhead trees, in fact I just looked again and I still don’t see it. Making AE a ranged cast at a target has been one of the most requested changes for Arcane but I personally never thought it was the right direction for the skill. Being in melee range as a caster is not ideal but it’s such an iconic spell and the fantasy of discharging raw magic outwards from the caster like that will be missed, at least by me, lol. And anyway this will all still be in vain with them doubling down on TotM as the main source of AoE.

Sounds like what arcane mages have been wanting for years. Aoe without being in melee.

Except it will still be a dead button because they also doubled down on TotM as the main source of AoE. AE or now this Arcane Pulse can’t hope to compete because there is no way to scale their damage in the same way.

Projected Arcane explosion away from you on top of mobs Like Blizzard or flamestrike, something that was needed since arcane explosion conception and well needed.

AKA ranged arcane explosion.

It’s the first talent in the 4th row of the talent tree just below Amplification. I love that it’s going to be an option, but I wish it didn’t replace Arcane Explosion. There are times I will want a point blank aoe I can spam with impunity, and times where I want a targeted range ability. Explosion is particularly desirable in PVP for a variety of reasons, but even in PVE it has uses. It’ll be hard to adjust not having it, but I will be giving Arcane Pulse a try.

I just noticed that this new ability has a cast time. And that’s terrible.

Left side, mid-top row with arcane surge

Looks perfectly fine judging from Preheat’s testing. Granted I think something is bugged with Arcane Splinter damage for spellslinger or something but overall it looks fine.

And not only does it have a 2.25 second cast time but it also only hits for 40% spell power whereas the regular Arcane Explosion currently does 77.2% spell power. Dead talent and a dead spell.

What?! This is terrible! How can I fish out stealthies around me? Or just mass pull enemies? Or run content just spamming arcane explosion?

Midnight taking some heavy Ls all in the name of “simplicity”.

Blast wave, gone.
Slow, gone.
Mass Barrier, gone.
Glacial Spike baked into frostbolt, lol, lame.
Scorch, gone.

I’m definitely okay with ranged AoE, but don’t remove arcane explosion. Would be neat if you target an enemy or player, it becomes ranged. Otherwise, it is around the player.

It’s an optional talent. Arcane Explosion still exists. The talent replaces it if you take it.

Yes but it’s essentially mandatory if you want to use Arcane Explosion since the untalented version continues to lack any modifiers and can’t be scaled for damage. AE has been a dead spell for years now and instead of fixing it they decided to replace to with what is essentially an AoE Arcane Blast but without the cast time reduction per Arcane Charge. It’s not really a viable solution, especially when it competes with other AoE talents that apply to Arcane Missiles and Arcane Orb which are massively better.

About the only nice thing I can say about it is that the visual looks neat (and the VFX change, becoming more elaborate as you build more charges, just like AB) but as things stand right now I don’t think it will see any play.
