WoW will never die

Doubtful. WoW can be profitable for Blizzard with a substantially smaller sub base than it currently has. Updates would be slower and more modest but it would continue.

In fact, that’s my guess for why they went with Classic in the first place–they’ll eventually be able to offer people a way to “play through” all the expansions in order with a modest additional investment.

So you honestly think people will pay for content again on classic or do you think they’ll just say nah I’ll go to retail and just play each expansion I already paid for! ?

Wow will 100% die when VR becomes seamless and AAA developers decide to make a new mmorpg for it

Maybe but it will go Mobile and that’s as good as dying

And people like me will help make that happen, as I donate to VR MMO projects. I realize this might be a waste of money “now”, but I want this dream to stay alive. Right now I’m supporting Zenith.

Everquest has been on 100% of the time since 1999. It was a groundbreaking game but why anyone would in 2020 still prefer it alludes me. So by example, this likely won’t die either, they probably still see a profit at a few hundred thousand subs. The expansions may get cheesier, the game may even get worse, but most likely it’ll still exist until entertainment reaches a point where it’s truly and utterly obsolete. Even then there may be old folks like me who just enjoy how things used to be. Apparently that’s true of Everquest and it never saw 1/10th the subs this game had at peak.

I think it still has plenty of years to go- definitely at least 5 or 6 more expansions, but it should go way beyond that.

It will of course die someday though. I mean if the next generation of gamers seriously holds Fortnite to be on the pedestal for “best game of the year”, then I think we can already guess that a game like this isn’t going to catch the eye of future gamers and solidify this game’s economy.

It hasn’t even been 16 years and the game has lost its millions.

WoW will eventually die. And when WoW dies, it will die by it’s own devs’ hands. It’s going to happen someday. It’s just a matter of when, not if.

But does it really matter? I don’t have any trouble finding groups for dungeons/raids/pvp. My friends list is full at 4pm EST. 10 people playing WoW atm.

WoW is already dead. Until Shadowlands… hopefully.

I don’t see WoW shutting down for at least a decade, because, much like Pokemon (the worlds most successful franchise in existence), WoW provides enough to keep people invested, even when an expansion leaves a sour taste in people’s mouths. What I do see happening is that, in either the expansion after, or 2 expansions after Shadowlands, Blizzard will do a massive overhaul of the engine, fixing up the looks and designs of all the older gear as well as redesining some of the newer gear and older mounts to make it look newer, showing that WoW is far from dying.

As a business owner I know there is a point where profits are low enough that I have to consider if my energy is better served elsewhere.
If I clear 5 times the profit margin doing X, why would i continue to invest my time and energy into Y ?
We just had a really nice store put in down the road maybe two years ago. Theyre already closed. Im sure they were making some profit having talked to the ones who knew the numbers, but it wasnt enough apparently and so they shut it down. Really annoyed us because it was close and had everything we’d normally need to grab on the way home, including starbucks and gas pumps.

WoW ‘can’ last for a long time. It’ll just depend on how profitable it is. I dont think they’d keep it propped up if it was slumping in subs so low and there was no light at the end of the tunnel.

Good thing about the game, however, is it has a loyal fanbase.
And Im sure they are dying to throw money at blizzard if they can figure out how to make the game great again.

just needs competition to be at risk - maybe one day.

ofc theres no chance of wow dying while the competion is absolute trash

Their golden ticket will always be free to play. Make the game entirely free, and then have th whole thing revolve around the store, like all games. Once the player count drops hard enough, it WILL happen.
