I think more likely it’s just the effect of the new Microsoft lawyers. They want some way reasonably to guess who currently owns an account in case there is a legal issue with said account.
If you have a U.S. account with no authenticator that hasn’t paid in 5 years and the payment method suddenly shows up from Brazil, they can guess something may have happened to the account.
I somehow doubt there’s actually that many players out there that have exclusively payed for their wow sub with gold for the last 6 years straight.
