Wow will never be an Esport. MMOs are boring as hell to watch, even at the top level of play by viewers that know exactly what is going on. I could take 4 hours with a world class power point explaining the mechanics of WoW to my mom, and she still wouldn’t understand why mythic raiders are cool. If they try to design WoW like an esport, it will be what kills it. Having arena tournaments and M+ stuff at Blizzcon is super cool, but it will never catch mainstream.
Esports work great for games like Overwatch; simple, flashy, easy to explain. Mostly the same for League of Legends.
My dad came over once while I was watching OWL and stuck around to check it out because it was fun to watch and easy to explain the basics, like most sports.
Watching somebody raid or do arena 5s is cool from a player perspective, but it might as well be a spinning buffer circle to the folks that don’t play the game.
