When I started WoW Forever Beta I made my characters with the same first name, but different last names.
From what I’ve tested I can send mail to the first made character, but not the others (it’ll say I can’t send mail to myself) when using those characters.
I tested this further by making a character with a completely different first and last name. When I do this, even if I typed in a different character than the first character, it’ll only send mail to the original character with the first name.

I am also experiencing this, to an extra level.
I encountered this problem, naming all my characters ‘Pigeon’ and then having the last name be different (I.E. Pigeon Cowbird, Pigeon Sneak, Pigeon War)
I tried to mail War some Light Leather from Sneak, but it ended up getting sent to Cowpoke. I tried to send it to War from there and it said I couldn’t send mail to myself.
So I deleted Cowpoke and tried to mail to War from Sneak again, same thing ‘Cant mail things to yourself.’
So I did something drastic. I deleted both Sneak AND War (War was level Ten, the other two were 1 and 3 so no real loss) with the idea being that if War was the only character, it would be the default.
Then I went to restore War, my logic being if I restored her, then she would be the ‘main’ character. Now, I can bring up the Restore screen, but the restoration fails. Why? It says I have an identical character on the server already, even though I don’t have ANY characters on the server.
I’ve submitted a Bug Report. The First Names are borked for now, try to avoid the same First Name for alts!
UPDATE: After relogging, the game now says I have no characters to restore. RIP.

That’s rough. Good thing we are all experiencing this in beta.
Also, thanks for this post. I considered deleting the original character in an attempt to fix it, but since it won’t I can skip that.

The mail system doesn’t seem to be able to distinguish last names or something (and it just “collapses” your name down to your last toon?). Not sure what would happen if a different account created a character with the same first name – that would be tragic if it went to a completely different person/account!
I was able to mail myself once, but then realized it went to the wrong alt (they are all “Gnare [Something]”, and when I tried to re-mail it from the other alt, it just thinks I’m trying to send myself mail.
Hopefully this will get addressed soon 
EDIT: Actually, maybe it seems like whoever created the first character with that (first) name then “owns” it somehow, and mail just goes to them?

Same problem, I use the same first name and just change the last name and I can’t send mail between my own characters. Basically says can’t send mail to yourself.

Just adding to say this is fully reproducible issue with characters sharing the same first name, which I know is something many of us intended to do for our alts.
Does anyone know about shared first names on different accounts? Someone ping me in-game on Ashradin Blackthorne (Alliance PVE) if you want to test this further - specifically I’m curious if you have Bob One and Bob Two, and I mail something to Bob Two, will it go to the right character?
I have this same exact problem. I went and created 3 or 4 place holder names all with the same first name. I thought the mail wasnt being sent at all, but turns out it was all going to the first placeholder account. So I deleted and re-created them and it no longer sent it to the first account created, but now it sends it to the 3rd name regardless of the target. if I return the mail it goes to the correct toon. However if I try sending mail to any of the toons with the same first name I now get an error saying you cant send to yourself. I did make a character with a different first name and the mail works fine, so IMO definitely a bug in the first name.

Have had this exact issue, I expect that a non-insigificant amount of the playerbase plans to play with same first name, different surname for their characters. Makes it easier to be known for who you are. It’s a bit frustrating, so hopefully this will make it’s way onto the major fixes band.

Pretty sure this happened to me, I had some stuff sent to me from a friend and I have not received it yet. They are certain that the name was correct.

+1. Even worse, it appears mail is being sent to the first character created with the same name prefix, even when sending from a differently named alt.
For example:
- Sender: Kwaz illa
- Mail sent to: Kwazii War
- Actually received by: Kwazii Pr
Kwazii Pr was the first character I created with the “Kwazii” prefix.
Yes same issue for me. I have “Sooth War” and just created “Sooth Saayer”. I also have a bank alt. If i try to send from Sooth war to Sooth Saayer = Cannot send to yourself. Attempting to send from bank alt to Sooth Saayer and mail goes to Sooth War. So I have no way to send silver or gear to my new alt "Sooth Saayer.

Just realized you were posting to someone else.
Had the same issue, but reading here made me think: What if… the last name is treated as server name. So I mailed to an alt Alpha Beta by using Alpha-Beta and that worked.
