WoW--->Final Fantasy XIV

In the same way a storage shack and opulent mansion are built using the same tools.

The resemblances are in the basics, but they do drastically things with them.

Anyhow, there’s not a lot more to suggest beyond what has already been said… but for what’s important?

FFXIV is a JRPG first, MMO second.

The game is story-driven, period. So either be ready for that aspect, or walk away now. If you go in expecting WoW with a new coat of paint, and you’ll walk away disappointed.

But if storytelling in games is your thing, you’re in for a great time.

I was the same way, I went over during SL, since it was so god awful. They really need to hang on till Heavensward, Then it gets really good. Also if they make it to stormblood, Ivalice alliance raids and Omega is a must.

“… pray return to the waking sands…”
Thank goodness they give you a stack of free travel coupons to get back there

WoW even did a joke about that in Dragonflight. I found it honestly hilarious. Though its not as bad anymore, they give you tickets to transport back the waking sands now.

“Pray return to the Waking Shores”

Do not delay if you see orange stuff on the ground. … DO complete the Novice Hall! Also, watch Jocats “A crap guide to…” videos on FFXIV they are humorous but accurate for the most part.

Roll a Miqo’te so we can be kitties together. :smiley_cat: :smiley_cat:

Yep, but your 1 character can be ALL the classes, so you don’t have to stick to just that, unless you wanna.

can’t emphasis this enough, the servers go off “ticks” so even though you look like you got out of it in time, you will still get hit.

I’ve tried to play FFXIV a few times but always bounce off.

Even through Heavensward I feel like the story isn’t as good as people say it is. Don’t get me wrong it’s miles better than WoW but that’s not saying much. Being a MMO still pretty much kills the idea that the story is going to be decently paced. If I’m rating all the Final Fantasy games I’ve played based purely on story XIV isn’t rating anywhere near the top.

At the same time it also felt like it wanted to try to be a single-player game too much. Even if I try to play in a group the game keeps forcing me to go solo to do certain quests. It’s like it only occasionally remembers it’s a MMO and has me run a dungeon.

It kind of ended up being a “worst of both worlds” deal for me.

Yes these are kinda lame. And have specific conditions to success (Kill so-and-so, dont let so-and-so die, etc) or you will fail. the slight silver lining is if you do fail the game lets you choose the difficulty of your next attempt. Iʻm lazy and almost always go with “very easy” which makes it so i could complete the mission by using my nose to hit keys.

Don’t bother. FFXIV is one of the worst games in the MMO genre, and the lead dev who has a stranglehold on the game has his head a mile up his you know what, and refuses to admit his ideas aren’t working.

  • The combat is legit horrible, 1>2>3>4>5>6>1>2>3>4>5>6 into infinity with a 2.5 SECOND GCD, it puts you to sleep fast.
  • The UI is designed for console, so it lacks so much QoL you’d expect from a PC game.
  • The raids are nothing like WoW, they’re very short and 100% scripted to the T to the point you could design a bot to do it and it’d be perfect. They’re also just a boss in a box with no trash before or after, no big story, just a boss in a box.
  • The community acts like it’s super nice, but it’s one of the worst – especially if you don’t worship Yoshi (head dev guy) or if you oust yourself as a conservative.
  • EXTREMELY horny community, ERPing is basically 85% of what people in that game do.
  • Everyone hypes up the story, but it’s generic, shounen slop but in an MMO.

So my advice is change course. Don’t bother with the game.

Don’t let the guy above me’s Bias deter you, seems like he has an unhealthy amount of hate towards the game. Just because he hates it doesn’t mean it’s a bad game.

It’s a fun game, Nothing like wow in my opinion. Loved the story, if you actually read everything and watch the cut scenes the story is good.

To be fair, the story is good, but it is filled with alot of fluff, and it takes years before it finally pans out, in Endwalker.

But let’s be real here, most of the story is mundane stuff like “go over here” or, “go fetch this”.

Yeah that’s mostly what I mean with it being a MMO killing the pacing.

FFXIV’s story is “good for a MMO”, but not really even that great in terms of video game stories as a whole.

Though in terms of MMO I’d probably put The Old Republic above XIV. The Imperial Agent storyline made me wish old school BioWare had made an actual full on spy themed game.

Good luck. I never could get into Final Fantasy because it doesn’t have everything that I enjoy with World of Warcraft. But maybe you’ll find what you’re looking for.

Heh, I was just logged in. The Moogle event is going on and there are multiple things I’m trying to get. Already managed to get 2 mounts I didn’t have.

God, Monk is so fun to play.

I hate what they did with Dragoon though, it feels really clunky now :rage:.

Monk is a lot of fun. Go slow. Enjoy the story, bond with the characters and setting.

I actually find DRG a lot better now. I do miss my dragon eyes, but otherwise I like it. They’re still kings of floor tanking, though :stuck_out_tongue:

I still like it, it’s still fun, it just doesn’t feel as smooth anymore. Could just be me though, I don’t know. Ever since they changed it I hardly use it.

I’ll be honest, DRG feels like an excuse to do something silly and go careening off the edge.

Once was being greedy against Seph phase 2, already in the stack marker to get launched and dodge the big arm sweep.

Went for a jump attack at the last second… or rather, about half a second too late.

Blamed animation lock (in a hammy fashion), got a few laughs and I think three comms out of that one.

DRG is basically FFXIV’s equivalent of Hunter in WoW :dracthyr_crylaugh:
