WoW--->Final Fantasy XIV

Hey all, this is not a hate post or anything, but I’m finally going to give Final Fantasy XIV a chance. I’ve always been a fan of Final Fantasy games but never got around to playing Final Fantasy XIV. Lately, I’ve been feeling a little burnt out on WoW, both retail and classic. Wish me luck. If you play Final Fantasy XIV, let me know if you have any advice or tips that’d be helpful! Looks like I’ll be rolling a pugilist, which I believe turns into a monk down the road.

Edit/Update!

Hey all, thanks for the massive feedback on tips and advice for Final Fantasy XIV. I didn’t realize just how many played or play Final Fantasy XIV. So far I’m having a great time and taking things slow. I rolled a character on Malboro, and it seems like everywhere I go it’s pretty active in the open world.

I embarked on the same journey once… it lasted about 30 minutes

FFxiv is great. A lot of people will tell you that it doesn’t get good until you get past the realm reborn story, but I thought arr was pretty good.

There is a “recommenced gear” button somewhere on your character panel. I can’t quite remember where. It pulls whatever is best from your armory chest for you and equips it while you are leveling up so you don’t have to waste time comparing stats and sorting through everything and figuring out whats best.

Also, don’t throwaway old armor. Keep it all. You can use it for other stuff later. You’ll see. :upside_down_face:

ARR sucks - the best thing I ever did was buy an ARR story skip for like $5, otherwise I never would have made it Heavensward, much less to Shadowbringers and Endwalker (which were really well done IMO).

I like ARR’s stories and quests. They are the most grounded of all the expansions as it’s your introduction where you start out as the new guy in town. You learn about the people in that area, their customs, their troubles, … etc. Excellent world building. As the story progresses, eventually you end up realm famous and it feels earned.

I do not know the MMO version well, but I will say this, that game has much better spell f/x when it comes to fighting boss mobs from what I have seen in videos and ads

I started really playing FF14 this year, back in January.

The biggest tip you’ll get from most people is this: Take your time with it. ARR is a slow experience, but trust me when I say that the things you do here will end up mattering down the line. The story does get way better, way more interesting. So don’t rush through it, don’t skip cutscenes. Veteran players will not rush you. This is a journey of hundreds of hours.

The community is very helpful there so if you have any questions, feel free to ask in Newcomer chat.

Second tip: Enable Legacy Type movement settings. This makes it way easier to dodge mechanics, especially when they begin to get harder.

Enjoy the story!

Boss fights (especially in the expansions) are very set piece designed, and the spell effects can get overwhelming (some blindingly so, Red Mage LB3s will just make your screen a big glowing mess).

FFXiV is not your typical MMO. You are required to follow a linear story. There really is no going off the beaten path (in terms of story telling.) That said if you are into story driven games, then you will enjoy it. The glamour system while limited, it is beautiful.

Also don’t fall into the Catgirl cult, Bunny girl forever.

Also. The sound track is emaculate. If anyone tells you it sucks, you know they haven’t played the game

TBF, its a mess in WoW on the ground in some boss fights too… a giant sloppy mess

FF14 is more visual novel than actual game until you finish the story. Don’t be surprised if it starts off a bit slow.

The story quality jumps up quite a bit in the 1st xpac, but then it’s a bit of a roller coaster with its ups and downs.

Oh for sure - especially when the encounter designer picks a color palette that all blends together.

As an FFXIV player:

  • Take it easy - you can basically treat the game as a single player RPG for most of your MSQ. There’s no rush! People will generally respect your cutscene watching.
  • Classes at endgame generally do get pretty complicated. May be worth looking into ‘positionals’ as you’re playing a pugilist. It’s very fun :star_struck:

Good luck!

Oh ya, best not to go to their official forums unless you have a bug to report. The mods there are very ban happy.

It’s not really a place to have conversations about things much less crash out - unlike the WoW forums; which seem to have become Crash Out Central where people go full paranoia and crash out over imagined future events.

Biggest downside to FFXIV is that they care so much about balance that there are zero meaningful choices to be made in the game. No fun equipment, everything is a stat box. No talents, just ine correct way to play. Even almost no difference between roles. Only meaningful choice you make in the whole game is what role you want to play. Tank healer ranged melee

I’ve taken a break. Just got a notifcation about my house gonna be demolished next week. Debating on whether to input my info again and save it.

DT really wasn’t my cup of tea, after my high of EW. (FF IV was one of my favorite in the series and IX was honestly the worst for me.)

Not to burst your bubble or anything, but FFXIV is basically WoW, with a Japanese coat of paint.

But I hope you enjoy it.

I let mine demolish, had a house in the mists probably would have been 23 million gil for all the items and stuff (I know they go back to the NPC anyhow right?).

Was facing the sea and everything but I kinda was like ‘I’m not gonna be held captive in subbing just for this’.

I feel likewise about DT. Found myself rooting for the villian (for MSQ 97+) won’t say who just incase for OP.
