Would you play on a HC retail server?

Probably not.

I’m not a big fan of investing time into a thing for it to disappear completely because of a simple mistake.

The only game I play hardcore is The Long Dark, which is designed for it (in fact, hardcore is not optional, permadeath is the only way to play from day one, but they take that into account at every step).

I think I played a game with non-optional permadeath once. Pretty sure I died at the same early stage a couple of times and just wrote it off as a loss. Something Sea (Silent Sea? Maybe?), it was this supposedly “Lovecraftian” game where you’re a little boat out on the ocean. Looked really neat but I never could figure out how to actually explore and I’m pretty sure the point of the game was exploration.

I could only retread the same path a handful of times before it started feeling like the worst waste of time. You lost fuel and maybe some other resource (food perhaps?) if you went even a little ways off shore, and I’d either die from running out of something or just to the very first creature I encountered.

Perma-death is a weird aesthetic. I could have really enjoyed that game if it hadn’t been so damned punishing and it’s the entire reason I did not buy the submarine expansion.

I was playing on Bloodsail Buccaneers when hardcore was all the rage there. There were always corpses on that elevator.

No. I die a lot on occasion, especially when leveling alts. I like to expedite “kill x of those things over there” quests and often overestimate how many I can fight at once.

Sometimes shiny ore also blinds me and I fail to notice the ultra strong mobs all around, who proceed to show me the error of my ways.

So, no, I wouldn’t play A HC version.

I’ve been playing HC Classic a bit, and while I wouldn’t call it “fun” it’s at least a diversion.

it’s very, very slow.

I wouldn’t enjoy that as my main game, no.

No interest in a HC server.

They’re antithetical to the reason I play RPGs.

Yep agreed. This is a game where you can die WAY too easily to even begin to entertain that possibility. I guess, if you are going to play classic anyway, it’s one of those “might as well give it a shot” things since you don’t actually lose the character, it just goes to a normal server. But I have no interest in doing that.

No, I play HC classic as it’s a barely remembered content with extra spice.
Playing current content in HC just wouldn’t be as much fun.

Have you not seen the leveling in classic vs leveling in retail videos? Retail is a joke. There is no hardcore aspect to it to even begin with. There would be absolutely no point.

Not a chance. I understand the appeal, but it is not for me.

Simple but high difficulty

Modern is extremely complicated.

The bar to entry shifts between the two. In retail you can just fly around and afk whenever you want, you don’t have to worry about rotations or buffs or anything. The only time that changes is when you raid or do higher end M+ content and that’s a smaller percent of an expansion.

All of HC is more demanding.

I’ve gotten to level 25 on HC and haven’t died/rerolled once. It’s slow play. Back in Vanilla, my first death was lvl 47, if I remember correctly. I survived by being smart and controlling my pulls. The thing most people don’t seem to understand about HC…mobs die slow. You can out-level them by 10 levels and still die if you happen to pull 2-3 mobs, depending on class.

it wouldnt work, retail is too easy.

The only way I think you would get to this point is because someone told you that you can’t group with others and use only what you find/make yourself.

Which those are just additional rules you can place on yourself.

I dunno, I laughed pretty hard at the Naxx Zeliek wipe too.

ikr? why play video games and not just iamgine it in your head

The difficulty is being able to not fall asleep for the 20+ hours of /played you need to hit 60.
