Also the fishing is really fun. Blows WoW’s out of the water. Just the right amount of interactivity to be a fun minigame but also lots of mix-and-match elements where you gotta go different places and use different baits. It’s sort of like pokemon, except entertaining.
I’m still struggling with it myself. All I know is I hate that man even more …with just about every fiber of my being.
I’d love to hear impressions from the folks who said they’re picking up ESO. I’m still on the fence and nosing around some Twitch channels, since the bundled game + DLCs looks like a great deal but is also a lot of cash for something that has no free trial.
At any rate, I’m a chronic game-hopper so this doesn’t feel so momentous. It’s easy to leave when you know the game will still be there later, though someday that won’t be the case.

All good things come to an end. Thank you all for your recommendations on where I should go for my next adventure! Most of my closest friends have my battletag, and if I ever decide to quit all blizzard’s games entirely I’ll make sure they also know my discord.
I hope you all never lose your passion for collaborative storytelling, no matter what world or what medium that storytelling takes place in! Its been a wild ride!
I was in the same boat for a long, long time. My problem is, I love the universe but hate what the writers do with its overarching story. And I can’t keep supporting the company as it is.*
What helped a lot was to remind myself that I can hold on to what I’ve built for myself without paying money for what’s effectively become a bloated chat client for me. I think of my characters and their stories as a plant or plants that I’ve lovingly cultivated and helped to bloom over the years. I don’t have to abandon these plants; I can lift them out of their pots and move them where I like. For now that happens to be Discord as a medium, and that suits me just fine.
So, hold on to that. Just because the game itself is suffering doesn’t mean you have to let go of your creative investment. They will always be yours.
* Of course the other thing is, personally I’ve been playing since mid-vanilla and my burnout is so acute now that even Blizzard hadn’t started licking the wallpaper, I might have moved on anyway.
Thank you so much for your message man. That would be me
I picked up the base game + Morrowind the other night. I haven’t sunk my teeth into it fully yet but 1) character creation is more robust so I was able to make an orc that looks a lot closer to my Gartok than WoW could ever permit, 2) combat is fun. It reminds me a bit of GW2 in that you can actually dodge attacks.
The lack of a mandatory sub fee is also very attractive. And it’s a gorgeous looking game, too. So far, it’s looking good.
Y’know I’ve been thinking of getting Amazon Prime anyway…
So lemme get this straight. That comes with free Twitch Prime (which I medically could not care less about if someone held a gun to my head), which currently comes with a free FFXIV license. So if I was interested in going Prime anyway, and am interested in getting the full version of FF, this is the time. Yes?
The combat is a really great mashup of tab targeting and action.
One of my favorite things about ESO is that the zones a are full of side quests that dont have anything to do with the main zone quest yet all of them are well written. Even the smallest question ESO can have really fun characters.
And that was how I learned that when you sign up for Amazon Prime, you cannot get Twitch Prime during your first month because it counts as a free trial. If anybody else had the same idea, be warned.
Whoa is that really you in that tweet??
There is a reason to care about Twitch Prime without actually caring about Twitch: free stuff. They give out in-game swag for lots of games that does not require you to actually watch screaming manchildren stream at all.
Well, it’s “free” in the sense of $12.99 a month. I had a browse through their current offerings and FF14 was the only thing in which I had any interest.
I get it for free because I’m paying for Amazon Prime, as you said. The Twitch stuff is just a bonus. I’m only highlighting that you shouldn’t completely ignore it, even if you want to ignore actual streaming stuff.
Because swag.
That’s a point.
I’m not even sure I’m gonna keep Amazon Prime after the trial period, though. I’m not sure I use Amazon enough for the economics to work out in my favor. I’m browsing through the additional benefits and not coming up with much I actually want.
Apparently I’m gonna have to just pay for my games like some kind of normal person.
I’m really enjoying XIV’s story so far. It’s a lot darker than I was expecting, but it doesn’t wallow in said darkness like a lot of modern fantasy (thanks, GRRM).
I’m also going through the Encyclopaedia online, and man… I’m really enjoying being able to immerse myself in a world with history, as opposed to a world where thousands upon thousands upon thousands (Because Big Numbers Are Cool) of years have passed with eff all actually happening.
I am shamelessly reliant on mashing the tab key to find things, so that’s great news. The nameplates seem to stand out really well based on what I’ve watched. (My eyesight stinks so these are things I look for.)
I keep seeing this targeting cross in the middle of the screen. Is that for interacting with items, or something else?
Also, since people are talking Twitch, it seems the top ESO streamer is a jolly guy with a big beard. He seems pretty chill.
The targeting cross is used for combat, like I said it’s a mashup of action and tab targetting, it’s kind of hard to explain until you experience it for yourself
What I liked about FFXIV is that Eorzea has a history but the game doesn’t force you into “new” and “interesting” ways of having to experience it. The history serves as just that: history. A reason for you to be doing the things you’re doing now.
