As a part-time player who has enjoyed his time in classic so far, but a little bored of it, I was curious about the leveling process in the current retail patch of WoW. I’m excited for Shadowlands and want to jump in now, but I know absolutely nothing about WoW in its retail state.
Is it worth boosting a character to 110 and leveling to 120 now or waiting for the next expansion to level? I’ve heard of “catch-up” mechanics, but what are those? Will they really help someone who is as clueless as I am right now?
Thanks for any tips/advice!
I’ll make this short but will have time tomorrow. This is a great time to buy BFA and jump right in. There is currently a 15% exp/rep buff for the 15th anniversery event that goes until January 7th.
BFA is on sale for $20, and it comes with the free 110 boost that others are buying for $60 in the store every week. This 110 boost deal will not be available after Shadowlands launches. I would read the icy veins class guide for the class you boost to learn the proper rotation and talents before bad habits set in. There are also a ton of good you tube videos on everything wow related including class guides.
Lastly, I would not blow the boost until you make a 110 trial character of that class and test all the specs to make sure you like it. Don’t want to waste a $60 boost on a class you dont like. Use Icy veins class guides on the trial chars.

The leveling changes in Shadowlands look like they will be a very nice improvement over the current leveling. However, the current leveling isn’t really that bad. (1-120 in retail is faster than 1-60 in classic.) The main issue is that the story is all over the place. The expansions aren’t in chronological order, and major cities are usually synced up with the current expansion. (It’s worse on Horde-side, but Alliance isn’t immune. The NPCs in Westfall can’t seem to make up their mind if Varian or Anduin is the king.)
Of course, if you’re going to use the 110 boost, none of that matters anyhow. You’ll slide right into the current expansion story.
The catch-up mechanics refer to allowing you to quickly get your gear up to par with the current tier at max level. This means that you are never way behind everyone else in gear, no matter when you start.
As for game mechanics, really the best thing you can do is play around. If you’re a bit worried about jumping in at 110 right away, make some new toons and level them up a bit. There’s also 110 class trials you can do if you’ve got BfA. They can be a bit limited, but it’s something to play with.
