Bugged for me on Silvermoon too. will let me go up 5 rocks then says im too far from the one right above me… i see people attempting it and no luck…
Wyrmrest Accord bugged. There were a group of players standing around /s saying it is bugged.

Yep, it’s bugged on Sargeras, players are amassing around it, can’t even get close enough to the first rock to even begin climbing.
Same for Tichondrius
Broken on Lightbringer. Could only go two rocks up. Was broken on other shards too in spectacularly annoying ways. I didn’t bother catching the names. One could only go four rocks up. One could get many rocks up but got blocked at the lip. Another looked it it had every rock needed except… the one that allowed you to start climbing at all.
(I have no idea why the forum is only allowing me to post on a random classic character…)
Also bugged on Feathermoon. Can only climb three rocks then there is a large space between the third rock and the next one.
Hey, found a work-around, which is:
- Be in a group of 2+ (only one person actually needs to tag the kittens, which is why the rest of this works)
- Have one person mount and the other hop on as a Whelp.
- Whelp picks up the Climbing Gear as normal (except you are a Whelp!)
- First person flies the Whelp up to the first ledge of the mountain, where you can actually land the dragon
- Whelp should be able to climb up from there and collect all of the kittens for everyone!
- If/when Whelp is knocked down by Temporal Orb, repeat steps above
I hope this helps! It’s so annoying when you can’t do the world quests for buggy reasons =/
ETA: This was on Draenor realm.

Bugged on Kilrogg Dec 31 11:50pm. No first handhold… left zone, logged, went to other quests & came back - multiple tries… still no luck. At least 3 others came, tried and gave up…

Still bugged on Area52. The first stone isn’t even available. Logging out and back in did not help.

Confirming this is bugged on illidan as well. Just tried to do the quest, unable to ascend past the starting area.
Was working a few days ago on Drenden, but is now bugged in both WMOn and WMOff

Still bugged. Able to grab first hand hold, too far to reach next one.
This quest is still bugged, after the 5th or 6th rock ascent, it says the next rock is too far. I’ve seen the video quest where a person completed it with no issues and no missing rocks. Still bugged as of today, 01/Jan/2023.
Bugged on Saurfang. 3rd climb rock missing.
If you join a group and have your partner fly you up while you’re mounted, you can then grab the kittens and both get credit.
Broken on Thrall.
Gm response was reload UI rezone, swap characters etc, and closed ticket.
Reopened ticker, average wait time now 12 days…
Tried this on 4 different characters, either 2nd 3rd or 4th handhold missing.
