World of Warcraft: Midnight Prequel (A Fan-Made Short Story)

Hey everyone, took awhile to write this up but I wanted to create a short fan made story as a little prequel to the next expansion as a “what if”, with the addition of new specializations for each class for fun! Hope you guys enjoy it! I’m happy to go more in depth about the new specializations below as well!

Nerub-ar Palace . Upon the death of Queen Ansurek, we, the champions of Azeroth watched as Xal’atath vanished into a swirling cloud of shadow. Yet, a sense of unease lingered—the battle felt like nothing more than a diversion, a grim prelude to something far more sinister. Our suspicions were confirmed when a portal suddenly ripped open before us, from which a group of panicked Earthen emerged, breathless and with a dire warning.

A massive tear in the fabric of reality had opened in the darkening skies over the Isle of Dorn, and from it poured an endless horde of void creatures. Among them was Xal’atath, her malevolent presence spotted amidst the chaos, intent on obliterating the entirety of Dornogal.

As part of the raid force began to enter the portal to lend their strength, a colossal vine erupted from the earth beside us. Atop the vine stood Orweyna, flanked by a cadre of fierce Harronir warriors. Their eyes were filled with urgency as they spoke of their homeland, deep within the uncharted Rootlands. Orweyna informed us that Xal’atath had been sighted there as well, manipulating the ancient root systems for purposes unknown.

Confusion spread among the leaders—how could Xal’atath be in two places at once? Faced with an impossible decision, they chose to split their forces. One group would press into the Rootlands to confront what they believed to be the true Xal’atath, while the other half would bolster the defenses of Dornogal, where the skies threatened to rain darkness and ruin.

And so, with hearts heavy and resolve firm, we steeled themselves for battle on two fronts, knowing that the fate of Azeroth itself hung in the balance.

As the Rootlands trembled beneath the weight of Xal’atath’s army, the air grew thick with the energy of battle. Void-warped monstrosities poured from the sky as Azeroth’s champions clashed with the invaders. What was once a sanctuary deep within Khaz Algar, nestled between Azj-Kahet and Hallowfall, had now become a warzone. The titanic root system, pulsing with the energy of life, loomed over the battlefield like ancient sentinels.

The initial waves were met with brutal efficiency by the warriors, death knights, and paladins. Their blades sang through the air, cleaving through the corrupted masses. Yet, for every foe that fell, ten more seemed to rise from the void, their forms grotesque and twisted by dark power. Death was not an obstacle; it was a fuel that made the void stronger.

The skies above darkened as the void flyers descended upon the battlefield, seeking to overwhelm the champions from above. But the hunters, evokers, and shamans were ready. Arrows streaked the sky like shooting stars, and with a mighty roar, the evokers took to the air, their draconic flames engulfing the void-born creatures. Thunder crackled as the shamans called down lightning from the heavens, incinerating the largest of the flyers before they could descend.

A trio of void titans, hulking beasts of shadow and malice, broke through the vanguard, hurtling toward the rear where healers and civilians, the Harronir, stood in terror. Warlocks completed their dark rituals just in time, summoning a towering Doomguard to intercept the monstrous beasts. Feral druids, in their massive bear forms, charged with primal fury, their roars shaking the roots of the earth as they stood alongside the demon.

Then, Xal’atath herself appeared, her form radiant with malevolent void energy. She raised her arms and unleashed a storm of void bolts, each one as black as night and charged with destructive power. A barrier of arcane energy sprang up as the mages desperately cast their shields, but the force was overwhelming. Even as the retaliatory barrage of fire, ice, and arcane magic slammed into Xal’atath, it was clear—this fight was far from over.

In the midst of the chaos, a wave of shadow rolled over the champions, ensnaring them in tendrils of dark energy. The tendrils gripped their minds as well as their bodies, flooding their thoughts with terror, despair, and visions of their inevitable defeat. The priests, both holy and shadow, struggled to break the spell, but even their combined might could barely hold the void at bay.

Just as hope began to falter, thirteen portals flared to life around the battlefield. From each portal emerged a champion unlike any they had seen before.

The Whipsworn, crackling with deadly energy, lashed out with a weapon that seemed to tear the very air apart, repelling void missiles and carving through enemy ranks.

The Valkyrian soared above, bathed in holy light, unleashing radiant justice upon the void with the grace of a celestial being. Their wings shimmered with divine power as holy bolts rained down like a cleansing storm.

The Necroguard, towering and fearsome, became a force of pure death, wielding a massive scythe that glowed with dark energy. With each swing, void creatures disintegrated, their forms torn apart by the very essence of destruction.

The Darkshape Demon prowled among the shadows, their strikes as quick as lightning, ripping apart the void’s generals with feral precision, before shifting into a demonic caster and decimating flanking void creatures, leaving a trail of chaotic destruction in their wake.

The Bladedancer moved like a whirlwind, daggers floating around them, slicing through enemies before they even knew they were there. In a blur of movement, they twisted into a rapid spin, unleashing a tempest of blades that tore through the void creatures effortlessly, each strike hitting its mark with deadly grace.

The Artillerist, armed with a colossal mechanical launcher, unleashed waves of destruction, each blast creating craters filled with void creatures’ shattered remains.

The Glaiver spun through the battlefield, their weapon flashing in a storm of blows, sending shockwaves that shattered the earth and hurled the void beasts back.

The Earthwarden, with the power of the earth itself coursing through them, stood unshaken against the larger void creatures. Their fists, like the roots of the very earth, sent shockwaves through the battlefield, scattering enemies like leaves in a storm.

The Dragon Ascendant, in full dragon form, shielded us with their massive wings and with a breath of dream-infused fire, they banished the suffocating void tendrils that choked us and the land.

The Vineshaper took root on the battlefield, summoning the very flora of the Rootlands to aid in the fight. Titanic roots surged forth, smashing and entangling the enemy, while venomous blooms weakened any who dared come near.

The Hemomancer, with hands glowing red, carved powerful runes into the earth, healing and empowering us. When a void worm approached, they turned its might against its own kind, unleashing a terrifying force upon the void ranks.

The Chaos Mage, a master of elusive arcane and dark magic, obliterated void sorcerers with a deadly dance of dark magic, elegance and precision.

And finally, the Archon ascended, bathed in light and shadow. With six massive wings, the Archon balanced both the holy and the shadow, unleashing beams of purging light upon Xal’atath’s army while shielding the champions with shadow.

The tide turned, and Xal’atath’s forces crumbled beneath the combined might of Azeroth’s champions and our new allies. But as the void mistress found herself cornered, she laughed—a sound as cold and infinite as the void itself. With a snap of her fingers, the skies darkened, and the shadow priests across Azeroth rose into the air, their bodies becoming portals for the void.

The heavens were blotted out, and from those portals, new creatures, even more powerful than before, emerged. Azeroth was drowning in the void.

Xal’atath channeled her void magic into a pulsating orb of pure darkness, steadily growing it in size and power. Her intention was clear—to annihilate the Rootlands, and us along with it, if we couldn’t stop her. But every strike we launched was futile. The orb absorbed each attack effortlessly, feeding off the energy and expanding even faster, becoming an unstoppable force that threatened to consume everything in its path. Time was running out, and with each passing moment, the void crept closer to our destruction.

But just as despair took hold once more, a breach of brilliant light tore through the sky, and a column of Astral energy descended, obliterating the shadowy orb Xal’atath had conjured.

Three figures stepped from the light, and as it dimmed, we gasped in awe. Flanked by two star-touched warriors, their eyes like endless constellations, was none other than Azshara herself, her beauty as terrifying as the depths of the cosmos. With a mere glance, Xal’atath vanished, retreating into the shadows, her laughter echoing in the distance.

The war was far from over, but with Azshara’s arrival, a new uncertainty loomed. We were unprepared for what came next. Was she here as an ally, or had we just welcomed a new enemy into the heart of the battle?

New Specializations

Whipsworn (Warrior Specialization) (DPS):
The Whipsworn masters both close and ranged combat, utilizing a sentient weapon that, under the guidance of the mages of Dalaran, can extend like a whip to strike distant enemies. They excel at dodging and repelling attacks, creating a fluid fighting style that seamlessly blends offense and defense.

Valkyrian (Paladin Specialization) (DPS+HEAL):
Trained by the Kyrian of Bastion, the Valkyrian soar into battle on holy wings, gaining unparalleled speed and agility. Their feathers scatter across the battlefield, healing and shielding allies, while their swift attacks bring divine retribution to enemies.

Necroguard (Death Knight Specialization) (DPS):
The Necroguard wields a scythe-like weapon to harvest the souls of their foes, growing stronger and more resilient with every enemy they defeat. Their accumulated souls can be unleashed in devastating waves, obliterating entire groups in a single stroke.

Darkshape Demon (Demon Hunter Specialization) (DPS):
The Darkshape Demon wields two enchanted masks, allowing them to shapeshift between two powerful forms. In their feral demon form, they gain heightened mobility, stealth, and brutal melee attacks that tear through enemy defenses with savage precision. Alternatively, by donning the second mask, they transform into a demonic caster, harnessing chaotic magic to unleash devastating ranged spells that wreak havoc from afar.

Bladedancer (Rogue Specialization) (DPS):
The Bladedancer summons three floating daggers that mirror their main weapons at reduced power. These blades strike enemies alongside the Rogue’s attacks, cutting through multiple foes simultaneously and enhancing their rapid, deadly assault.

Artillerist (Hunter Specialization) (DPS):
The Artillerist wields a massive mechanical launcher, capable of switching between various modes to adapt to any combat situation. From focused single-target strikes to explosive area-of-effect barrages, the Artillerist can handle both one-on-one duels and large-scale battles.

Glaiver (Monk Specialization) (DPS):
The Glaiver specializes in polearm combat, reading their enemies’ movements to expose weaknesses and deliver devastating strikes. With each attack, they gain increased mobility, dodge chance, and multi-hit potential, growing stronger as the battle progresses. They fluidly switch between two stances—one for focusing on single-target destruction and the other for handling multiple foes, making them adaptable to any combat situation.

Dragon Ascendant (Evoker Specialization) (TANK):
The Dragon Ascendant embraces the might of a larger dragon form to become a living bulwark for their allies. Their powerful breath attacks alter the battlefield itself, providing buffs and fortifications for allies while debuffing and hindering enemies. Their immense presence and strength make them a formidable force, protecting their team from harm.

Earthwarden (Shaman Specialization) (TANK):
The Earthwarden commands the power of the earth to create protective barriers for allies and unleash seismic attacks that trap and damage enemies. Their control over the ground itself makes them a stalwart defender and a force of nature against large groups.

Vineshaper (Druid Specialization) (DPS):
The Vineshaper takes on an elegant plant form, using nature’s raw power to ensnare enemies with vines and protect allies with natural shields. Their poisons slowly erode enemy defenses, dealing damage over time with effects that linger even after being cleansed. Vineshapers excel at controlling the battlefield, ensuring that their enemies remain vulnerable long after an initial strike.

Hemomancer (Warlock Specialization) (HEAL):
The Hemomancer delves into forbidden rituals and blood magic, harnessing the power of life itself to heal allies or control enemies. They can manipulate even the strongest foes, bending them to their will, and drain the vitality of opponents to bolster their own strength and that of their companions.

Chaos Mage (Mage Specialization) (DPS):
The Chaos Mage wields a fusion of Arcane and Dark magic, tearing apart enemies with powerful spells. However, as they tap further into their dark powers, they grow stronger at the cost of their own vitality, balancing immense power with the risk of self-destruction.

Archon (Priest Specialization) (DPS+HEAL):
The Archon harmonizes both holy and shadow magic, wielding holy energy to smite foes and shadow magic to safeguard allies. They can assume a six-winged form, temporarily granting access to enhanced abilities that turn the tide of battle with overwhelming power.
