But it wouldn’t be a retcon to say that Arthas and the Jailer were both dream manifestations of (insert new character) and that neither of them ever actually existed. It would just be a recontextualization! 
Seriously, the whole end run of “we’re just adding more to the story! we’re recontextualizing!” is such disingenuous nonsense. It sucks every bit as much as a traditional retcon for all the same reasons, it doesn’t matter how much you quibble about the definitions.
