Will you be trying Guild Wars 3 next year?

Since it has controller support i sure will

This may or may not be worth getting excited about in like 2 years.

It is nice to know that there is some sort of real MMO in development though.

Lol I still remember when GW2 came out was on early release. It was fun played it til my mesmir was 60 but I inevitably left and came back to wow.
By the time I picked GW2 back up they changed everything so much I couldn’t really get back into it.

Geez thats been 14 years ago…I feel old.

Heh… I also joined 2007. xP

Idk man, if it’s anything like GW2…

Say what you will about Blizzard, but at least they really don’t ask you to open your wallet past sub and expansion costs. Yes, there is the token and a small handful of cosmetics, but like… people here freaked out about a single housing exterior on the cash shop, because that’s how accustomed we are to not going onto the cash shop to buy things we want.

But GW2 was intense with the shop. For so many convenience items. And yeah, nothing you had to buy, but the game was designed around pushing you toward the shop for so much stuff like bag space and gathering tools and anything that looked remotely cool for cosmetics or mounts and like… yeah, idk, I will probably play it for a hot minute or two, but it won’t keep me if it’s remotely in the same vein as its predecessor.

as a controller user, GW2 lacks controller support so i skipped that but GW3 is also on PS5 so that means i can at least play it. and GW2 had no sub so they needed revenue past the box price, servers are not free. here we pay a sub AND have to deal with a horribly priced cash shop.

Yeah but frankly I would rather pay a sub than be punished by mechanics designed to friction their way into making you want to spend a lot more than $15/mo for convenience. I am weak and my wallet has suffered when I play games like that. I have to protect it from me lol

I’ve gotten into WoW in 2011, FFXIV in 2020, and GW2 in 2023. Though I don’t have much experience with Guild Wars as a whole, the GW3 announcement did intrigue and excite me. I’m looking forward to seeing what it’s all about… and yet, I haven’t gotten what 2 is all about yet. I’d also be worried about the playerbase splitting, and server activities becoming more scarce. That’s been my main advocacy against WoW Classic. As I’d have preferred Heroic World Tier in 2019 (as I suggested it), I’d hope ArenaNet has plans for consolidating, incentivizing, or discounting the playerbase moving into the new installment with their collections in some form. If not, it seems like an anti-MMO move to me.

If it’s free. I don’t recall there being any kind of RP scene in GW, and I don’t particularly like the races that much.

Regardless of how wacky WoW’s story becomes, the races all have their established lore with the RP playerbase and we can make characters within those rulesets to tell our own. That goes a long way for my enjoyment.

If I can’t get invested in my character, I’m not going to stick around for the long term, which an MMO demands.

I don’t know the details or extent, but I believe that when GW2 launched they had some form of in game cosmetics or titles or whatever based on GW1 achievements if you linked the accounts.

For me personally the incentive will be playing a fresh MMO that isn’t running on a dated engine and feeling stale after 14 years. Yes, I spent time and money on GW2, but thats just entertainment and it won’t be a waste because I had fun doing it. You buy it, you enjoy it, you move on to other entertainment that also costs money.

The deciding factor for me is whether we can jump in GW3. If not, no shot

Sure I’ll give it a go. Used to play gw1 before wow. Didn’t really care for gw2, although I couldn’t explain why. I haven’t kept up with their lore, so I’m not sure how impactful their story will be for me, since rumor has it that they’re going to the past. I doubt it will replace wow for me though.

Of course. Why wouldn’t someone try a new game?

Jumping…? No no, in 2028 we are LEAPING!

True, and the same went for FFXIV:ARR. Again, though, all those re-releases betray what an MMO is supposed to be. I stick with Retail WoW precisely because I want a long-term secondary world to live in. I wish its promise wasn’t betrayed with a thousand copycat regressions into the past (as opposed to thoughtful, though trivial feature integration…). All the games re-releasing every year, losing their artstyle to rapid modernization, monetizing and politicizing further… would just fail to grip me as someone looking for escapism where I can pursue goals, create values, and learn about art and the human mind year by year. The evidence this process is harmful to MMO worlds? How empty they’ve become.

Depends on a lot of things we don’t know yet.

But I’ll keep an eye on it and probably watch somebody on Twitch play the beta.

No, not really. One MMO is plenty, and I still dip to the unofficial City of Heroes server sometimes.

That’s fair. For me 15 years counts as long term though, I’m good with that and fine retiring those GW2 characters and all their achievements, and moving on to a new fresh secondary world to live in with all sorts of new things to explore and earn.
