The point he is making is that many people HATE their jobs because their jobs are REPETITIVE and UNREWARDING.
When someone fires up a video game they are typically escaping the mundane world they dwell in. So if the game is mundane because it’s REPETITIVE and UNREWARDING then there’s a big problem.
Note: UNREWARDING doesn’t mean throw loot at people. It means not creating jack-in-the-box loot where it can roll a dozen different ways 11 of which are suboptimal. Make fixed loot with interesting affixes and put it behind a challenge. Bam. Done. The only RNG that ever made sense with loot was the loot table odds. That’s it.
Well it is partly part of the RPG in the MMORPG. Not that there is. Much of it left in WoW today. If it wasn’t for all those activities there would just be a game of dungeons and raids and you saw nothing else of the world but them.
There are at present maybe 2 million subscribers in the west. What were the subscriber numbers during the height of deterministic loot design? 8-10 million?
