For me, it was less of a lore issue [since I can’t comment on that] and more;
A lot of it looked cheesy, a lot of the actors felt like they were miscast.
The acting for the most part felt bad.
The highlight of it all were the CGI orcs, [not the lady orc, she looked bad also]
It just was a bad movie for me with lots of potential to be great.
That’s not at all what I’m saying. I’m saying the overall majority of audience members enjoyed the film, and that your views on it doesn’t match that.
Lucky you. They didn’t show Warcraft within 100 miles of my town. Not even an exaggeration. I asked the theater manager why they weren’t showing it, and they said the other movies they chose were going to be more popular. We have a 4 screen theater here, and one of those screens was some stupid movie (I think either a faux-documentary about a kid pop star or some forgettable chick flick).
THE reason it didn’t do as well at the box-office in the U.S. is because the narrow release it had. It was #66 for the entire year for domestic box-office takes, out of 200 films. Well above the half-way mark. It killed in the international market because they actually advertised the film and built hype elsewhere. It was doomed to fail in the U.S.

I don’t care if my views match. I’m not so insecure that I’ll wait to see an audience reaction before I formulate an opinion. 99.9% could think it’s the best movie of all time and it doesn’t change a thing.
You don’t have numbers. You don’t have a way to know what consensus is.
I thought it was ok.
Think it suffered severely from people that were really interested in it having very specific preconceptions of what they wanted. Basically it didn’t match what was in their head from reading the book.
And I don’t think you can ever make the lore wonks happy in this game.
