As I recall, from my Vanilla days, it was always hard to find a tank in LFG or Trade Channels, most ppl used guilds as their primary method of dungeon running. It wasn’t until the build in LFG queue was introduced, that ppl started to role tanks and healers, because dps queue was super long, and tank and healer queue was instance. My wife would party with my Healer Paladin, just to skip the wait time lol.
Don’t remove gear. If you’re raiding, keep a (partial) DPS set handy for running 5s. Swap out some pieces.
Also, you don’t have to be prot to tank dungeons… even at 60. ESPECIALLY if you have some tank pieces from raiding.
as a single target healer my job is to heal the tank 1st - dps only if tank is stable and not in danger.
I have 2 rules:
- Kill Skull
- Let me pull
They rhyme! One thing that has really helped me is not tanking skull. I just let DPS open up into it, maybe taunt once, and just build threat on the other mobs. Usually with everyone on it that mob dies quickly and I have time to establish threat on the rest.
here is what i have noticed watching some people play and in groups i have run with
you have to take the time to craft a team of players who you gel with
however you find these people friend them and group up for more stuff
the good players i watch are all very good at starting their crew- and all of them tank
they all start by finding their healer buddy and then bringing in dps to fit them- a lot of times selecting a team starts with getting a group who dont use the same gear
anyways start small but we have to make that first step to forging the group
and people like it; esp atm in classic (edited)
granted i dont have any high toons yet but you can start getting your groups
and- alot of these good players who all run tank, all find a healer buddy asap, and start adding to their crew…
these guys all run more “classical” groups; not the hypermodern setups with aoe cleave; regardless they know what they want in their groups and get them

the bottom line is we have to take our own steps to seize the initiative in this game
Well said Soultrane.
3 Mage DPS don’t even need a tank.
aoe tanking is pretty hard
when theres 5+ mobs i cant hope to generate enough rage, even as prot, to make them all attack me
i just dont have enough rage to put a sunder/shield slam/revenge on every single one of them
and ever since the demo shout nerf its been harder to keep aggro when theres a ton of mobs
but noones called me a bad tank, though a few have mentioned that im a bit slow
all i have to do to get a decent pug is to that that its a full run or a quest run if its ZF, SM, or BRD
4 mobs i can manage, though, but it aint fun keeping threat on 4 mobs
also, it helps to taunt a mob thats about to die so you can conserve rage for other mobs; this taunt should be done sooner if the mob is a runner, so that after taunt wears off, the mob runs away
Well he’s dropped out of a few groups that had 3 mages looking for a tank.
- Let me drink from tiem to time
Effective aoe threat generation in vanilla is Sunder, tab target, Sunder, tab target, Thunderclap, tab target, Demo shout, tab target, etc., etc. Keep doing that till everything is dead.
Same reason there has always been a shortage. Tanks make friends and run dungeoms with those set groups/guild. They have 0 need to pug. Due to population imbalance.
Right, but that’s my rule you get a special shoutout from me to let me know if you need anything and that I will keep an eye on your mana before we start.
Ah no, it’s my 3d rule when i’m tanking
<~ Proven Class Role Racist!
This is why i respecced prot when i dinged 40. Groups dont have the ability to be picky about prot pal tanks when there arent any tanks. If they want to throw a fit at me needing STR gear, they dont get a tank.
I mean its a bit early still for this lol There seems to be a shortage of tanks at all levels for all of time
And I bet many tanks have good dedicated groups they run with as well, more so if they were quick to level.
But yes, dps need to give tanks time. Its not a new idea or people just playing differently, most dps don’t think lol
Every single dungeon I have healed so far, the tanks had the worst time holding aggro or taking it. If there were a large group all the dps were tanking too.
The rogue would be attacking some other random guy instead of the tanks target. The hunter would be doing god knows what & then feign death so his mob would run to me, the healer. The mage, every pull would aoe the start of the pull then run around in a panic.
I’ve only healed warrior and pally tanks so far. And actually all of the tanks were smart and tried very hard. But they all were extremely sad that the dps wouldnt give them time. I am sure it is frustrating. One reason I don’t tank.
Sadly by far most people won’t learn or listen or change in the slightest and all of us tanks/healers will cry together.
Yeah I love tanking, but I hate tanking in classic with the meta the way it is. So I stopped. Which means I’m slowly questing and grinding as a warrior with crap gear. Which means I’m still only level 47.
If y’all want to stop sitting around looking for tanks, you shouldn’t make tanking so miserable.
Every loot is prot pally loot !
STR ? : Armor + AP
AGI ? : Dodge
INT ?: more mana, faster pulls
Spirit ? : Regen between pulls ;p
STA ? : More life
+X spell ? : More agrro
+X heal ? : Ok not sure for this one. It is very rare I throw a heal while tanking.
This has been happening to me a lot, especially in SM. I’ll put a skull on a mob, initiate on it, and then the enhance shammy will attack a random other mob and then wonder why he’s pulling threat from me when he gets a windfury proc on his 2h axe.
