Sorry for my ignorance, but what exactly is sharding? Is it the same as phasing?
I tend to use âphasingâ and âshardingâ interchangably, so mostly the same thing. Except that it doesnât relate to like, layering phases of a zone with quests or anything.
Itâs that thing where if you go to Stormwind, and your friend goes to Stormwind, and youâre in the same place but canât see each other and have different people around you, because youâre in separate âshardsâ, copies of Stormwind even though youâre on the same server.

Thanks for explaining it to me.
Iâve honestly never seen that with my friends since Iâve played the game with the exception of trying to meet one of my characters on my other account in stormwind to give her gold, tabard, etc for leveling. I can see their dot on the map, but we canât see each other. Itâs really bazaar.
That would really suck if youâre trying to meet your friends and they arenât there in the same space.
Why they would even do that is beyond me. I sure hope they fix that for you folks who do rplaying. Good luck!

This thread NEEDS to get noticed. There should be no excuses for sharding.

hundreds out of the 10s of thousands of characters on those - I have characters on Moonguard which I made for CRZ reasons - the server wasnât high population when I made those characters and I never RP.
It looks like itâs off now!

Stormwind is back and filled with people RPing. Itâs great to see the city lively again.

careful what you wish for itâll be rough RPing with huge lag and 5 seconds delays on any key press 
Iâll take some lag over not having anything to do when Iâm done with my content for the day.

Personally, I think they should do something like FF14 where you can see what shard you are in and hop between them freely.

Sharding hasnât had an impact on RP servers, the servers are just that empty.
Jokes aside though, yeah i do like how 14 does it.
Yeah luckily Iâm not doing my dragonriding race World Quests in the middle of Stormwind.
Also, thereâs a ton of people in Stormwind right now and no lag that Iâve noticed! Although Iâm sure the people who play on a 56.6k baud modem and onboard graphics with their settings cranked to âhighâ and donât RP anyway yet they rolled up all 20 of their characters on a high-pop server and are allergic to posting their 300 AH transactions anywhere but in the SW Trade District AH will be rolling in to complain aaaaaaany minute nowâŚ

Sharding absolutely effected MG. The difference is night and day.
