Wolf is in the name… Wolf is not a dog and dog is not a wolf. Takes generations to breed a wolf into a dog a dog can never become a wolf.

I feel I must clarify, they are the same genus, not the same species. A wolf, fox, and dog are all canids, but they are not the same species of canid if that makes sense.
It goes phylum> family>genus> species. In that order. Therefore one can be so closely related as to be in a genus, but also distinct enough to not be the same species, as is the case with Canis Vulpes (fox), Canis Lupus (wolf) and Canis Domesticus (dog).
This is why you can also cross Felidae, equinids, etc. As long as it’s different species but close enough in genus order, you can produce offspring. Because any two species in a genus can be further away or closer to each other on the species branches of a Genus.

You are correct regarding foxes, i.e., dogs and wolves (both canis lupus) produce fertile offspring whereas dogs/wolves and foxes (genus vulpes) or coyotes (canis latrans) for that matter do not. A great discussion regarding genus and species. Thank you.
