I worked on both Warhammer and swtor and can guarantee acquiring the SW licence had zero bearing on Warhammer.
Both were massive IPs with dedicated teams and pretty clear visions tbh, you couldn’t even blame their respective failures on mismanagement, being rushed or lack of development.
They simply weren’t enough to entice the wow crowd away something that at the time the industry still thought was possible. Why couldn’t another MMO pull wow numbers but history has taught that’s not the case WOW was a fluke, of the right IP at the right time with the right mechanics.
we didn’t have that much churn tbh in 08 the big shift happened in 09 once mythic rolled into BW. I would agree that at that point WH was pretty much abandoned and all eggs were thrown into the swtor basket.
So I had a look at new world - Focus on crafting stuff, Eso vibe. massive pvp battles. It doesn’t seem that bad but ain’t a wow killer . I will give it a go when it comes out.
Played on max settings, didnt exactly wow me pun intended. WoW obviously doesnt have the tech for it but plenty of games developed recently have swaying trees.
I grew up playing WoW on the lowest settings possible at sub 20 fps, it’ll take more than swaying trees
This is the first time I’ve ever heard anyone mention New World as a wow killer. New World isn’t aimed at that, it’s not even in the same genre as wow, yes it’s a mmorpg but it’s more of a survival fantasy then steampunk/medieval fantasy.
And that’s the way it is, WoW sold 4M copies of SHL, we need only a few new games taking 500.000 players from WoW and that’s it.
People think that “WoW Killer” is one Big Game, actually, no the wow killers are like ants.
Every time someone complains about something and someone says “if you don’t like it, get out” you are doing your part of the wow killer process.
For as shallow as it might be, I sincerely cannot play MMOs where the only racial options are humans or elves. I like games where I can get very invested in my character; MMOs tend to have less direct story regarding your “champion” or “adventurer” because the story generally cannot revolve only around you. It’s why I can play humans in single player games as the story actively involves that character, and they tend to have personality.
But in an MMO and even an RPG specific setting, humans are so gosh darn boring. So are elves, almost every flavor of them at this point. I like playing something that is so different from reality that I can get creative with their story.
So, unfortunately, New World really has no interest for me. That and hyper realism is so common these days it’s just boring to look at, I’ll take heavily stylized and creative any day. That’s why one of my favorite movies from 2020 was Wolfwalkers.
Well, more likely metered ISP services will kill WoW before Blizzard or anyone else has a chance to.
Big changes are coming, and they’re coming fast.
If you plan on using the internet on your PC to play WoW everyday, expect to be paying hundreds a month for internet.
You realize browsing the forums takes far more bandwidth than playing the game right? The only bandwidth intensive part of playing WOW is downloading updates.
Its still going to add up, quite alot.
Especially if you’re playing enough to be optimized every week.
But hey, maybe youre right. Maybe metered ISP’s will save WoW via eliminating excess browsing, thus allowing MMORPGS to reclaim their mystery, and sense of adventure(currently we know every thing 6months before it even exists, which has massive negative impacts on the genre)
Never bet against Bezos lol but yeah LOTR is going to get massive amounts of attention for a remake and I believe that are also putting out a series on prime
it’s didn’t help that both lead devs for war just up and left on top of EA controlling it so yeah that game was going to have an up hill battle. Shoot now that I think about it, two mmos that failed happened to be under EA.
Did anyone even say it was a WoW killer? I never even saw it mentioned on these forums.
The genre desperately needs more games. So instead of getting all defensive about it, i would embrace as many developers trying their hand at mmos as it is a dying genre. I dont want to play mobas and first person shooters my whole life so this is a welcome addition.
I think it’s not a threat because it attracts people outside of mmo genre.
People who play wow won’t be into it.
But I think people who play rust, path of exiles or other open world survival games will look into it.
