Why Naxxramas in Classic?

I would like to preface this by saying that I did play original Classic WoW back in late 2006, about 6 months prior to TBC being released, but was definitely not a hardcore competitive player, and my toons were between levels 40 and 50 up until TBC released and I actually started playing the game legitimately and not like the twelve year old who started.

I simply wanted to ask exactly why the original Naxxramas was placed in Classic? Why release it as the final patch of vanilla instead of just waiting for WotLK? I understand a good amount of it lorewise, Arthas sending Kel’Thuzad to invade and the connection to the Staff of the Guardian and all that. However, with the connection to the Lich King being so prevalent with the Scourge invasion, why would Blizzard not just wait to release a patch like this in Wrath instead? Is there any explanation from any of the Devs on this? I understand that it was brought back in LK due to the lack of time much of the player base had to experience original Naxx before the release of TBC, but still, it honestly just feels out of place to me being in Classic. Having AQ and C’Thun be the “endgame” of that story just feels so much richer. How is a lieutenant of the LK more of a threat to our world than an Old God? At least the LK feels like more of a calamity level threat to the world almost on par with an Old God, even a weakened one. If somebody wants to go through the lore with me on it that is fine, but personally Naxx in Classic just felt out of place, I don’t really know how else to put it.

There are a lot of undead in Classic. It makes sense there is an undead raid.

Maybe the WotLK expansion was written from ideas gained when creating Naxx and not the other way around?

I think it fits original WoW fine.

because classic wow didn’t have a singular driving narrative. Things just happened. Old god shenanigans, gurubashis acting up, black dragonflight doing stuff, etc. Things were just happening in the world, and you as the adventurer chose to go after it. It wasn’t until later when blizz started forcing a singular narrative per expansion of wow.

EPL and Silithus were the end game zones and there were several max level Scourge dungeons so it made sense for it to be one of the final 2 raids.

The better question is why they brought Naxx back. And the answer is because they made it and so few people got to see it in Vanilla.

Lore wise, this is why.

During Kel’Thuzad’s return to Lordaeron he required a power base of operations in order to spread the plague. The Lich King gave Kel’Thuzad Naxxramus for this pupose. It was a powerful war machine that would help Kel’Thuzad.

This is why it is in classic, Naxx, played a key role in the plague and the securing of the plaguelands. It is also why it is the last instance before TBC. Naxx represented the penical of the plague wars and stood in the plaguelands as the stronghold of the Kich King in those lands.

This is the correct question and the correct answer.

To add to my thread. Naxx was in Classic, because it was the launching off point for the Scourge in EPL/WPL. As the Scarlet Crusade and Argent Dawn began to fight back, their ultimate goal was to force the scourge out of Lordaeron, EPL and WPL completely, to do this they needed to defeat Kel’Thuzad who was hold up in Naxx.

This is also why Naxx was in WotLK. The Lich King recalled Naxx back to Northrend after the Joint forces of the Scarlet Crusade, Foresaken and Argent Dawn were successfull. The Lich King did not want the necropolis falling into the hands of others, nor have it destoyed so it was recalled when it was evident it would be impossible to maintain the lands.

classic naxx =/= WOTLK naxx
