Why isn't voice chat enabled by default?

That flashing icon is aggravating enough. I don’t need to hear random people screaming, listening to awful music or getting political on top of that.

Cause I don’t want to zone into Stormwind, and hear 30 people calling eachother names and making Anal/Thunderfury jokes.

Keep Voice Chat disabled. Or better yet…remove it entirely. We have Discord.

I really think you overestimate the number of unpleasant people there are; and honestly it’s sad to see that the expectation of the community seems to be really low.

Expect the worst of people, and you’re seldom disappointed.

We all play for different reasons. I play for a bit of solitude and escapism from the real world. Why do you want to force your social gameplay on everyone?

Nothing about an MMO says I have to socialize with strangers that I’ll never talk to again.

Do you read the chat channels in the game? Low Expectations are proven every single time I get the urge to turn them on.

Wait, so, when you join a group you’re just auto put in voice?

That would be awful.

I don’t want to listen to some random jerk raging in a bg, or some 12 year old kid squeaking at the group in a random 5 man.

Can you imagine how awful an lfr voice chat would be?

God. Just no. Easy content absolutely doesn’t require voice comm.

I don’t know what to say at this point. I’m honestly surprised there’s so much negativity towards the idea of y’know… talking with people.

We are talking right now. Difference is that here you have to exercise self control and manners.

Why do you even play the game?

For fun?

Tammya heres why. In chat I can report you, ignore you, you can and wilol be disciplined for bad conduct.

In voice chat you cant.

And, to be honest, in a very large number of cases, especially where it comes to some members of this forum, I would never want to be in a voice chat with them.

Without a doubt, this is proven through pretty much any game that has it on by default vs ones that don’t.

I think it should be on by default as well. It’s not THAT hard for people to turn it off, so being against this is just non-sensical.

You cant turn it off.

Uh, yeah you can. It’s called not joining any channels.

I would prefer to use other voice chat programs when I decide. Voice Chat that is part of WoW is forced upon too many people and is causing massive lag issues zoning into zones for example. WoW voice chat is having problems with anti virus software and even with an exception made it still causes micro stutters at random times which drops FPS.

I haven’t joined any Voice Chat channels. When I log in, I am placed in the following Voice Channels - General, Trade, LookingForGroup, and WorldDefense.

There is no way for me to turn off Voice Chat for these channels.

Actually, saying just 30 is being…optimistic. I’m also from Moon Guard, so walk into our trade chat and you’ll get homophobic remarks, anal memes, thunderfury, politics-based fusses, local drama about guilds that support child predators/pedos, people saying Alliance sucks or WoW is about to perish, more thunderfury, and about every acidic drop of bile you can think of.

Once a month I see situations were discussions are civil and polite. So, 1 out of 30 odds.

But do I want all of this on voice chat the second I join the zone? No No NO.

Its more or less another voice chat system we never asked for, never wanted, and cant disable.

I could make a list of what I DO WANT from Blizzard, but somehow that list never makes it anywhere on their to do list.

I also look at this from a networking perspective: If Voice Chat was removed entirely, less trafficload on the servers and maybe a small reduction in latency.

Plus what is this:

I see it every single time I log in. I have never once tried to add a person to a voice chat channel.

Nope. On by default, but wasn’t always like this. Used to be a way you could disable it entirely in the settings. Doing this provided a small boost in performance.

But that option was removed quietly in some prior patch.

Why can’t it be an added thing, and I not have to download it by default? The only times I’ve ever been asked to use it was when I was in a pug, and they were drunk and annoying. Discord works better anyway.
