They made classic with the intention of it being passive income. It’s low management and they designed it that way. Everything is automated and the entire customer service team are bots with the exception of a few senior service reps. My friend that works for Blizzard said classic has almost 0 CSRs.
Classic was a neat romp and im glad it existed. There was a lot of fun to be had.
It was also clear as day thay it aged exteemely poorly. Press one button, the worst PvP system in MMO history, raid content thats about as challenging as LFR.
Love it for its time, no shade thrown at people who still prefer it but its in the past, where it belongs.
Its not called Classic because its old and a replica its called Classic because that’s what it is - a masterpiece.
Its certainly an aged game but its still the best this genre has ever done with that in mind I cant help but feel like time is not really an obstacle for this particular MMO. Still, it takes two to tango and the game is only as good as its server community and thats where it kind of falls apart.
every person i have spoken to when asked why they do not play retail server and only play pserver is because they refuse to pay a sub each month for a game they dont even know if they will like. + pay for each expansion. when they can play for free on a pserver once they are their why would you really leave and have to do it all over again but most likely slower because most have higher rates then retail.
if they made say vanilla f2p then they would eliminate alot of vanilla private servers cause as you said most want to play retail but can’t or do not want to pay.
making the barrier to entry smaller they could level to 60 do raids etc get a feel for the game etc then move on to the sub based model to level further this would be a big advantage over private server giving the player the option to advance if they want to (this should have been the case for all expansions imo not forced world changes)
i feel this would be a very effective way to turn previous none subs to subs
pretty much summed it up in a nutshell considering blizzard offers the same service as these private server now can you think of any other real reason? nothing new is coming to classic the only difference between retail and a private server (specifically blizz like) is the rates but i see this as server could be gone tomorrow so gogo.
They won’t make classic free and the people telling you this are just saying it to make Blizzard look bad. In reality, they want a server without bots and a normal timeline. That’s it really
tbh, you find better service on private servers.
and in cases like wotlk, they’re actually using the source code so it’s not a wonky pos… and ofc thats not the case for all pservers it depends on the people running it, but I have had more authentic experiences on pservers than classic.
ow god i was under no impression that blizzard was in way shape or form was a gonna do this. i think this would be beneficial to the game as a whole it was my opinion
the irony here. you know there are private servers that have bots coded into them? cought npcbot cough i used it back in the day you could make characters then assign them a bot script and they would quest or raid with you was pretty neat but i digress.
anyone who paid attention to som knows phase 1 was a W and people left because of blizzard design decisions like making mc overtuned, no world buffs, and phase 1 high warlords
Now examine the middle and tail end of the project: players quit in droves over realm mismanagement. Those who stayed for all 6 phases unanimously decided that they not only didn’t want to be seasonal toons, but wanted to abandon SoM early so as to play something else. Some SoM players chose to openly tell Blizzard how they really feel about seasonal play:
Dev time is better spent cultivating realms that are already running instead of spreading it even thinner for the diminishing returns of seasonal spinoffs.
I don’t disagree that the early/fresh game is a draw to most players (as it is to me).
But one of the downsides to a Seasonal WoW is that SoM fragments the Classic player base. I regret about 9 months, vacillating between TBC, SoM and Wrath.
When, in retrospect, I wish I just stayed in one place (Era) and grown my characters and friendships there.
Classic WoW (I’m talking about Vanilla or TBC - not Wrath, which is more similar to Retail than Vanilla) is not a game you just pickup and put down.
Classic WoW is more like a garden where you spend years cultivating relationships through your characters’ experiences.
What I have asked for is something pservers have offered since day one.
Open 1 permanent fresh PvE and PvP realm every couple of years. Then eventually connect the realm with others and preserve them and the community. Merge nearly dead or obsolete realms down the road as necessary. Rinse and repeat.
Classic Era deserves to be cultivated and cared for.
As a WoW veteran of 17 years, I can say Classic Era WoW can continue to yield a steady and reliable profit stream. (Something for Blizzard to consider when the quick-fix expacs of Wrath (and next, Cata) come and go with their less predictable player bases.)
Biannual Classic Era Fresh would allow people to stay in Classic Era and experience Fresh Classic - without the rush and artificial changes, which will never satisfy most players in the end anyway from Seasonal WoW.
Biannual Classic Era Fresh would be healthy (and profitable) for the Classic WoW community on Blizzard servers - as the persistent demand for Vanilla pservers has already proven, most famously by Nostalrius.
