Why has Discord become such a common requirement to join a guild?

Definitely. I’m interested in seeing how it affects the feel of Classic, because back then guild chat was pretty dominant.

It might not help the nostalgia crowd very much, but the game itself will still be what it was, so hopefully it’ll work for people.

Am i the only one who hates teamspeak? its a clunky piece of (BLIZZ LET ME SWEAR PLEZ) imo

Used each of those - they were all absolutely awful or unpleasantly clunky. Discord is user friendly enough that even the mostly tech illiterate can figure it out without too much hassle.

I still get irritated whenever I think about Skype. Bad Microsoft. Bad.

Skype confuses me

I remember RPing with a friend over Skype and having Skype basically constantly lag. Basically, since I type at about 70 wpm average on a good day, it was -constantly- lagging whole sentences behind me. It was awful and the most immersion-shattering thing. Otherwise, Microsoft has just been obnoxious with it and windows 10 - you literally cannot get rid of it. It’s -always- running in the background. If you try to shut down the process, it’ll just boot itself back up.

Nobody wants you, Skype. Go away.

Yeah, I don’t do Skype. It lagged for me, too.

I have months and months of important logs of bygone RP arcs that I did on skype that are just… gone. They weren’t saved on any cloud and the HDD they were on locally has been vanished for years now.

Well, that’s a pretty stupid opinion.

Now, what I will say is that I miss forums. Discord does some stuff better, but forums have advantages in other areas. Especially for those who can’t check in throughout the day, it’s easier to catch up on conversations on forums where they’ll be threaded rather than having to dig back through hundreds of lines of chatroom text. IMO, best thing is to use both in tandem.

I am not sure where I would store my hot dog jpegs if it wasn’t for Discord.

The only guilds that make Discord a “requirement” are hardcore guilds that have big egos, or (some) roleplay guilds. Otherwise it’s entirely your choice if you want to use it or not. No one should be “making” you download anything.

add me on Discord and then pay the $79.99 CAD for a Doom Eternal pre-order for me

For me it’s a convenience thing. Discord is a quick and easy way to keep people up to date and in communication.

I remember the first RP guild I joined, which was the very earliest incarnation of “The Eternal Watchers”, run by a worgen named Julius… We sorta fell apart because Julius just disappeared for ages at a time and never really let anyone know. Because we only communicated via guild chat, it was a bit tricky at times to stay in touch at all. Discord helps with that, like, if someone can’t be online for a while they can let people know even if they aren’t online.

That said, guild chat is now backlogged. So in theory it’s no longer an issue.

I will raise you with taping cardboard over the TV so no one could cheat on N64 Goldeneye.
