There are Blood Elf Shamans in-game, they’re are also Night Elf Shamans. They’re typically baddies, but who cares.
There’s also the Night Paladin follower from WoD I believe.
Class restrictions was a nice little thing that informed the player about the various races of Azeroth.
I wouldn’t hold my breath to see on unique takes from the many cultures of Warcraft to justify classes.
Paladins for example will just be diluted into the Silver Hand; see Blood Knights.
The thing is I recall the reason for class / race restrictions being you were a typical member of your faction. This is why stuff like human hunters or orc mages weren’t on the table. More than possible but very uncommon in Orgrimmar or Stormwind.
But that’s not the case anymore. The DESPERATELY NEEDED tutorial revamp now has you as a rookie member in a coalition rescue mission. Pretty much anything could be a part of that.
Though that being said I don’t want to excuse lazy world building. I do think you could make anything work but I don’t want like Undead Druids and Paladins appearing one day sans explanation. You know like they already did with the Darkfallen skin for elves.
Because you could do a cool thing with the Forsaken mastering fungal plague magic and alchemical shape-shifting. And perhaps undead clerics discover this Sacred Flame with it’s arcane portent can be wielded in a way their kind struggled to harness the Holy Light in.
Ya know. Lore more interesting than “Yeah these dudes are here now”.
Because stuff like Tauren Mages tracks but idk. What was that like. How’d Tauren parents react when their kid decided to apply to Dalaran? I’d also imagine there was one perpetually frazzled enchanter there who now had to make desks that could warp to fit everything from gnomes to Tauren.
Not sure about WoD but I’m fairly certain that there’s one in Legion.
As a follower listing. She’s not seen live.
Delas Moonfang was the one I was thinking of
And you’re right, she’s from legion.
From a design standpoint this is a nightmare.
Eventually they will have to get rid of all interesting racials. It would be much more challenging to balance every race with a unique and interesting racial. Undead and humans couldn’t be hunters but they had a fear/stun break that didn’t share a cooldown with similar effects. Cool! Undead can’t be paladins. Again, that’s fine. They can hold their breath indefinitely and break fears and eat corpses.
And so on and so on.
I don’t get the issue. Will of the Forsaken gives me a definite edge in PvP as I’ve a way to get out of some of the most common CCs that puts my medallion on a shorter timer.
And Nelves can outright dodge stuff like Chaos Bolt with a well time Shadowmeald. And Orcs outright have reduced stun time. Dracthyr get a free slow fall.
What of it?
They are generally interesting and good though there are always certain racials that are considered better. My point is that the best racials get nerfed if all classes are available to all races. Race restrictions keep people from feeling like they HAVE to play a human or an orc.
The only classes that should be limited are the three hero classes and maybe druid. However, numerous races currently available can absolutely work with druid as is.
Am I like one of the few that doesn’t think Tauren Paladins / priests are dumb? One of their Gods is An’she, represented by the sun. It would be weird if they didn’t have those classes. Plus I do like how it is rooted in Taurens view of druidism. Balance in all things. That includes the sun. Given that modern Druidism is heavily moon themed due to the Night Elves.
The only race / class combo I will always have a problem with is Mag’har Warlocks. Given what the term Mag’har means to the Orcs.
I can sorta understand it, given 2/3 of the tauren gods aren’t really tauren gods
I was never a fan of “everything for everyone” regarding race/class combos, but then I saw a mechagnome druid concept that turned all their beast forms into Beast Wars transmetals and broke my monitor with the money I threw at it, so I can’t advocate in good faith for restrictions anymore.
no, sunwalkers are clearly broadly popular, but tauren paladins are brought up in these threads in particular because they basically violate the wcii/wciii aesthetic for ‘paladins,’ which is pretty flat tbh. i’d argue the main reason you at least see fewer people arguing the same thing about blood elf paladins is because blood elves used to be entirely white are closer thematically and visually to the humans of lordaeron
like when i hear people whine and sob about more races having new class options i basically detect nostalgia for the RTS games looming over the arguments presented in service of this butthurt. it’s not as though race/class restrictions are necessary for cohesive racial or class fantasy (D&D, anyone??), but because the foundations of the franchise are basically a ‘race’ war, those things were sold initially to help give definition. but tbh it’s pretty stale by now. tired of seeing these threads because the argument, much like the fantasy it clings to, is pretty dated,
they’ve also already stated they were walking back on everything can be everything, likely cause they realised how much work druid alone would be
Paladin also.
If you can imagine a world in which a handful of people learn to do something that the majority culture doesn’t do, that is the case for it being playable. It being uncommon is not an excuse for it to not be playable.
There’s TONS of excuses to make something not playable even if it makes complete sense for it to exist.
Game balance is the number one reason. Heck, it’s the reason for classes in the first place.
It was a reason back in vanilla for why Shammys were horde only and pallys were ally only. It got to be pretty much impossible to balance after a while and so both sides got shamans and paladins.
There’s always an excuse, until the excuse no longer works
