People not playing or liking warlocks is an old tale. There’s something about the class that people shy away from. Is it because the class is “evil” and most people prefer playing the “good” classes? Is it the historically complex rotation (although they weren’t that popular in era vanilla either when their rotation was one button!) Maybe just all the utility (summoning stones/healthstones) and pet management weren’t attractive to people (but then…why are hunters so popular?) Maybe its just not flashy…watching DoTs can get boring and stale and while destruction is fun for its faster pace and crits, its always just a worse mage in the end.
Look up Cynwise’s blog on warlocks. Its a good read. The fact is that for almost 20 years warlocks just haven’t been a fun or popular class. And we don’t exactly know why.

Here are some reasons why I avoided it for so long:
- Demon management increases the number of keybindings needed to play smoothly
- You can’t name your demons
- The demon AI is terrible
- Many of the demons do a poor job fulfilling their intended role
- Several of the spell graphics are not interesting to look at or are just ugly
The class fantasy of siphoning an enemy’s life, energy, and soul is very appealing to me. It’s unfortunate it is tied up with demons and setting things on fire. The former I can understand somewhat, but leave the latter to Fire Mages. The developers made a stupid decision to turn Warlock into another flavor of Fire Mage for most of SoD. It looks like Affliction is finally good, but unfortunately I no longer feel like playing.

Played lock in 2006ish and 2019.
Fool me thrice shame on me.
I don’t play warlock because they’re the bad guys! And they play with demons, who are not nice!
Because I’m terrible at pet management.
Zila farm is the worst gear farm ever put in the game. So that’s a bonus to.
