Why do you play WoW over other games?

Alright then, time for another probing question into the minds of the WoW community. Or at least the facet of it that frequents the official forums. Let’s keep it relatively open and straight-forward to start with:

Why do you play WoW over other games?

I’ve asked similar questions in the past, though I think a lot of it was asking in a manner that was a bit too open-ended; in other words, the answers received were a bit too vague and generic. One of the most common before was a basic “I find it fun” or one of the many variants… well, that’s a bit too vague and not helpful. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t be surprised if I see that again as sarcastic response.

So let’s try to give it something to compare to – other games. Not specifying which, as there are a myriad of other options: single-player and multiplayer, RPGs and other genres, other MMORPGs and entirely unrelated platforming games. So presuming that there is at least one other game or genre you find enjoyable, why do you play WoW over the other options?

What is WoW bringing to the table that other games don’t?

Well after having a stroke from the title of your post…

I can say that I play wow over other games because there’s so much to it. From mount farming, to pet farming.

I enjoy raiding in WoW more than any other MMORPG. While RF > Heroic are not challenging Mythic raiding is where it is at and I find myself coming back for more.

I also enjoy starting over characters, and going through the zones… the music in WoW is amazing and nostalgia flows… I remember everyone i met during my time in the game, and all the adventures we had.

It is for those reasons I keep subbing.

I just play WoW because it’s easier to jump in - jump out of. I can hop on, do a few bosses of an old raid, and if something comes up (like my parents), I can just quickly exit out. I only ever do solo content and more questing than dungeons so I hinder few as well.

I would honestly be playing Monster Hunter World if it was as light and accessible at the moment.

Edit to add a few words.

  1. So much to do.
  2. It is or “was” a Blizzard game.
  3. Filthy scrub casual friendly.
  4. Still supported by the company.
    4a. Regular updates and patches.
  5. The artwork is redonkulus good.

Reasons have changed over the years. As for my most recent return to the game just a couple weeks ago -

It’s a social game but the ramp-up time to doing social activities is lower than other MMO games on the market. Do you know how much BS you have to do to start doing content in FFXIV? A lot. I can’t in good conscious recommend FFXIV to someone who isn’t a weeb. Meanwhile, my old man and I are able to text each other and coordinate signing on and playing our Demon Hunters together. We’re running around doing Legion quests (he hasn’t played in a while, he dipped his toe in the water with Warlords of Draenor but missed Legion) and it’s just a lot of fun. Trying to get one of my brothers to also roll a demon hunter (or get a level boost or something) to run around with us. Very quick and easy to get into content for the most part and the content is fun.

Before that we were playing Diablo 3 online, but the Diablo franchise hasn’t received content in a while.

theres 1 game i always migrate back too once in a while…
skyrim.
Just to see the new mods they create. the community is always coming out with ways to reinvent the game.

Why do I play WoW over other games?

I suffer from sunk cost fallacy.

WHY DO YOU PLAY WOW OVER OTHER GAMES?

The only other game Im really interested in right now is ESO.
I play WoW more because I prefer the races and the cartoony graphics.
Nearly everything about ESO is better, but being a RPG, race is big part of the fun…most of it for me, actually.
If ESO had less bland races, Id probably be playing that right now instead.

Yeah, noticed that error a bit too late; my mind goes faster than my fingers and words are occasionally out of order. Corrected now.

I’ll let this topic run for a bit before putting out some responses and possible follow-up questions.

I don’t. I play many games.

Skyrim, lol. I logged like 110 hours in that game back in 2011 and then never played it again. I don’t get it. There are good replayable RPGs (Mass Effect cough cough) but when you’re done with Skyrim, you’ve already seen the same Dragur ruins like 35 times. I don’t see the appeal of wanting to see those same Dragur another 35 times. All characters in Skyrim are the same as well - they’re all stealth archers. There’s literally no build diversity.

WoW is the only MMO that has Arena, and I don’t like open world/large scale PvP. Besides that, the raids are much more appealing than other MMOs as well. Also, and this is the big one, I’ve played the game for more than half of my life so I don’t want to drop it for another MMO. Way too much time invested and emotional attachment into my characters to do it again.

Besides that, not much else. There’s just no other MMO PvP experience like WoW arena. I’ve tried almost all the popular ones, even at WoW’s lowest points it’s still very good compared to others.

I think a lot of it is sunk cost fallacy. I’ve tried a ton of other games. Most of the time I get around a few weeks or a month in before I feel like I’d rather just stick with WoW where I’m at the level cap than start a new unfamiliar game from scratch without people I know or ways to ease leveling (e.g. heirlooms).

This applies even more if the game is a WoW-style game because it doesn’t feel different enough to justify starting from zero.

If I had a group that were all going to a new game I think that would change the perception but in the past I’ve been the only one in my circles who cared or knew about other games.

eh i never got into that specific one. Maybe i prefer more midevil vs high tech sorta stuff.

Thats where mods come in handy. The community makes every character unique. every grass hd, every drauger 10x more frightening. Give it a shot. it takes allot of time to get into but once you start modding you will loveit.

Really like the raid team I’m with, strong community. I have also played for awhile and I like the different facets of the game - running raids or PvP, transmog runs, theory crafting etc.

Making gold by selling bags! Lots of fun and what life is all about according to Conan the Barbarian.

A lot of games have adapted the MMO staple of developing a character, collecting appearances, etc. etc. etc. to try and extend the longevity of the game. Most games’ version of Multi-player mode is doing the same maps over and over and over ad nauseum.

I’m tired of spending 3-6 months developing a character for a video game only to move on to the next game and repeat the process all over again. What’s the point? I also don’t find repeating the same few maps enjoyable, even in WoW. So now I only play WoW because of the characters I’ve spent almost decades developing and WoW also has a fairly diverse amount of open world content or I play single player games that I either know I’ll enjoy (e.g. Pokémon) or have a really good story. All other games are more or less dead to me because I don’t want to invest time in them just to abandon them in under a year.

Running out of reason to, at the moment.

  • I’m not interested in trying for Cutting Edge this expansion
  • All my friends already quit so no desire to push arenas now that I’m sorta geared
  • Not super interested in going for Keystone Master… just not a big M+ fan, but I’m gonna try to turn over a new leaf in Shadowlands
  • A significant backlog of single player games to get through, thanks to the weekly freebies that a certain company has been giving out (not sure if we’re allowed to name drop, don’t want to get banned for “advertising” lol).

As soon as I get my 750 Service Medal mount (~120 more to go), I’m gonna take a break until pre-patch.

Ah, so you did like three of the sidequests?

@OP: I’ll play WoW and other games. I frequently have a single player RPG or various multiplayer games I’ll play with friends (who don’t play WoW) at the same time. WoW is just my “I’ll go run an alt through ToT while I read emails” game.

Because I remember being 13 and getting the Frozen Throne and having some of the best moments of my life. Especially in Battle.net where it helped me build friendships in school whenever we’d play dota or TD’s. Before that I was a loner and had trouble talking to people, so the game really helped me to bond with people.

And in time I just got really invested in the lore, and with all the memories I made with the guilds and people I met.

Like no matter how many problems the game have, I feel like it brought me a lot of happiness and it still does.
