Why Do People Hide Behind Their Alts?

People posting on has been a common thing for a long time. It is not unusual to have guild rules to not use your main toon on the forums.

I believe you can see everything that they have done by looking at achievements if they do not have their profile blocked. An uber mythic raider could be on their lvl 20 gnome mage alt and you could easily see what they have accomplished.

Why does the pretty picture with colors on it matter more the the actual opinion or facts being posted?

People are all too eager to derail from the actual discussion to attack people’s characters. One time in the Death Knight forums I was accused of having an Unholy bias because my mog was green… while I was in Frost spec with matching weapon mogs. And somehow I’m always an elitest jerk, while somehow never qualifying to have an opinion on high end play depending on who disagrees with me. The forums are just filled with too many people unwilling to budge and inch on their reactive, biased opinions, no matter how obviously flawed they are.

Trolls and other s* posters of the internet have always relied upon anonymity as their protection from accountability. These are the largest group.

The other group are just extremely cautious or shy and use the extra layer of anonymity as a buffer of sorts or a security blanket. Being an introvert myself, I can sympathize.

So in general, for the sake of anonymity. Just wanting to be anonymous for different reasons.

I’ll have you know I have been on vacation five times due to varying factors and always been on my main which is this one. I do not fear the vacation, but with my complexion I burn very easily from the sun.

I don’t have any “clapback” that I want to “say with my chest”. At least, I don’t think I do. I don’t know what those mean.

This isn’t some kind of contest, where we charge together and crash our chests together. And what would a “main” matter? Does a user profile somehow affect ideas?

In my opinion there is no correlation between achievements and good game design. An excellent player can be a crappy game designer, and an excellent game designer can be a crappy game player. Different skills. I’ve leveled to max on every subclass (all 36 of them), and I like them all. Have you? Or do you only play one class for years (which makes you a bad game designer)?

The point (the ONLY point) is discussing ideas. That isn’t hiding. I’m glad that you’re proud of your achievements. But I don’t look you up to see them. In this forum I just consider your ideas.

First off, that’s not what the forum is for. If you are here to argue with other players then you might want to take a peek at the forum code of conduct. This forum is meant for discussion, not arguing.

Mostly because people will look at your profile and call you out because you never did +15 mythics… when you’re talking about something unrelated like pet battles.

What is the point of you creating a thread where your premise is filled with logic-leaping assumptions?

Because what I have done and am doing in-game is none of your business. I realize this generation has serious entitlement issues but really you are not entitled to know everyone’s business.

Stay in your own lane.

Only people who alt post are bads and anything they post is irrelevant, kinda like them.

Taking the bait, there are a number of reasons:

  1. People like privacy.
  2. People often attack others and try to dismiss their complaints via ad hominem rather than the topic they raised.
  3. Blizz tried to force us all to use our real names once. I’ll let you look up the hilarious consequences of that for yourself.
  4. Some people prefer to simply create an alt persona that says something in and of itself. E.g. mine is a constant jab at the stupidity of the trust level system.
  5. People have been known to track down people on the forums in-game to hurl real time abuse at them.
  6. It’s annoying to have to switch toons all the time depending on the topic discussed.
  7. Other stuff I’m forgetting.

Take your pick and get over yourself.

protecting the e-dentity has been a cowardly practice since the original forums.

people who do it know they can’t back up their claims since we can right-click and see their achievements.

The forums wouldn’t let me change my character to one I actually play for 3+ months.

The only people I care about on these forums who need to see my activity are Support, and they can see it all just fine.

You don’t matter to me.

This game is full of foul mouths, cheaters, exploiters, botters, multiboxers, Carry buyers (meaning all your special achievements mean 100% less than nothing), racists and trolls.

Why should I care that you’re upset because of the number under my profile picture, in any way, shape or form?.

because people need to understand that characters records/levels dont matter if youre just trying to get a point across with carefully thought out paraphrasing and conjecture.

Interesting, because it’s usually the elitist pricks hiding behind lowbie alts.

Quote them please.

Personally I post on an alt because of people like you. Who demand ‘main posting’ and the only reason you demand ‘main posting’ is so you can look at said character’s profile and take shots at the poster rather than the argument the poster is making.

I find it the most funny when level 10 alts achievement call people on their mains when they disagree with their opinions, feels so ironic.
