You let me make a monk that uses staff animations, specifically from my blood elf hunter, at least make it a glyph? I will not complain.
I’ve always compared the WoW Monks to the Hyuga clan from Naruto. They’re attacking your vital chi/chakra points with precision strikes fueled by their own chi/chakra over brute force or perfect physical form. Extremely mystical with enough body discipline to get it done.
Moves that especially stand out were Touch of Death, Paralysis and Ring of Peace (reminds me of Hinata’s defensive barrier).
I could see that. I’m about a decade too early on Naruto and couldn’t get into it. Just kept saying to myself “This isn’t Dragon Ball Z…”
I was born in the 80’s myself and honestly the start of ol Naruto was rough for me. This definitely ain’t no DBZ for sure.
It’s definitely more Crouching Tiger / Jade Empire and less Bloodsport / Bruce Lee. Very heavy Wuxia Theater influence over Shaolin.
But it lets me Sonic the Hedgehog launch myself off everything so I’m happy.
It’s not naruto either, both being based on Japanese culture and monk is based on the chinese kung fu movies and shaolin monks.
However I would say more early Dragon Ball.
Which makes me think of MoP when I would duel my monk rival on my server, people said it looked like a dbz fight with all the teleport and rolling lol
So much fun with this
As a man of principle, rogues will always be the ninjas in my mind.
Yeah naruto had some weird samurai version of ninja, when traditionally they had zero honor and used any means necessary (rogue)
Naruto’s are fantasy ninjas… they use seals, summons and magic are pretty popular in any media even before Ninja Gaiden (Super Shinobi and Shadowdancer)
Same thing with Monks, it’s fantasy wuxia version that probably draws more from HK manhua(comics) not Shaolin monks.
Peak of serenity clearly shows monks training all day and practicing with various weaponry, very much like the shaolin monk.
You know multiple sources cam be involved right?
Obviously every kind of Chinese fighting and combat monk can trace it’s inspiration from Shaolin but you know absolutely nothing about Chinese Wuxia if the only thing you spout is Shaolin. Training with various weapons in a temple and weapons isn’t exclusive to Shaolin… I could easily name a dozen schools that do exactly the same. Besides WoW monks aren’t really “monks”, no religious following, everything is beer related and have a rather “do whatever I want” kind of lifestyle. The only monkish thing is meditation, which again isn’t exclusive to Shaolin…
All the skills, effects and motifs are clearly drawn from various Chinese Wuxia media, 80s movies and HK comics.
Diablo monk is more aligned with Shaolin monks, even looks like it.
I would definitely agree with that
Didn’t say it was. However
Then educate me, instead of being a * about it. Name a few instead of saying I could and then proceed not to.
- this was uncalled for
I’m the douche? A bunch of people here know and see you as the big douche who hangs out at Monk forum literally giving your unwanted input on every thread. Fine, Wudang, E-Mei, Hua Shan, Qing Chen, Song Shan, Kong Tong… these are just a handful what is usually presented in popular media. Show some humility and you may actually learn something, douchebag.
This is a public forum, meaning if you choose to participate you will have to deal with everyone.
Dual monitor and allowed to be in the forums at work and nothing else.
And others that thank me for help and advice, guess what that’s people.
I have to say I really couldn’t care any less about the opinions of people I will never meet, you don’t like me? Oh well, I don’t judge myself worth off the opinions of others, especially internet people.
However I do apologize because it was uncalled for.
I learn things all the time and have no problem admitting when I am wrong.
I will write those those names in my checklist and have another subject which to look at.
Edit: never mind looked too weird
Maybe I’m being a little too harsh, but I can’t stand passive aggressiveness and people who are somewhat pretentious when they reply to a comment, any comment.
In any case, I digress and apologize. If you read the comics or play some Chinese games, you’ll notice they love to have tiger, dragon, sword effect projection flying all around the page/screen. It’s HK comics signature and that’s where Goku got his “dragon punch” effect from (prior to that move, most of DBZ stuff was chi blast/wave effects). This is where WoW monks are mostly made up of, I would think.
Also, Naruto ninjas aren’t your typical ninjas (they favor so much hand to hand and chi blasts/spells). WoW Monks and even Rogues definitely draw a lot from them, there’s no doubt.
P.S. also, Avatar.
I wasn’t going off the particle effects though, I agree the majority of the stuff like actually abilites and things are def those things.
I meant the core concept of what the shado-pan, the only lore of monk we have.
That’s all I meant, someone who knows this stuff a lot more than me explained, in a convincing manner, how shado-pan was based off shaolin.
See this is the curse of text, I promise you it’s not “Karen asking for the manager”, but more like barracks talk.
We were rude little sits to each other, but it was never malicious.
It’s unfortunately a habit I never broke and I been out almost 10 years
Did avatar just take different disciplines and that was what the elements were based on
So really it was full circle
I guess I see it differently, the connection to Shaolin is so thin (WoW monks are so not monastic) with the exception of the title monk and meditation but it’s definitely based on martial arts pugilistic schools in the same era so popular in Wuxia stories and Shaolin does come out as usually the #1 school.
I also feel the effects aren’t just effects, the whole Monk faction theme is based on the Celestial Augustines, then they have moves thus special effects based on that. I’ll see if I can find some links to HK Manhuas, you see immediately what I’m talking about. (Moves like FotWT and FSK are day to day stuff)
The reason why I brought up Diablo monk is because everything from mannerisms to beliefs and nature resembles so much of Shaolin monks, despite the fantasy combat elements. WoW monks are such a big departure, especially when they so indulge in brewing, wandering and getting hammered. Just my opinion
I was just saying the core concept, if fantasy ninjas like naruto are, at it’s core, still ninjas then the same could still apply.
I meant more at it’s core,
Not most, however did you do the dailies for the celestial? They had you going to various temples, not to see just fighting, but also doing the spiritual a bit more.
The shado-pan more so, instead of all monks maybe.
Yes, my favorite. So much better than Naruto. Though I maybe too old for both.
Water - Tai Ji
Fire - Northern Shaolin
Earth - Hong Gar (Toph’s is Southern Mantis…or was it Northern)
Air - Baguazhang
I am 32 watched both, just recently rewatch avatar and working on kora now.
If you can take care of yourself and your real life responsibilities, as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone, enjoy what you want.
My sister’s husband has something stupid like 20k, if not more, of Legos.
